Something I haven't seen before - hawk eating earthworms

I would imagine the earth worms would be like a fast-food joint to us. Why float around in the air when you can sit down at the ol' Peck & Eat joint? The vultures & crows definitely need a little ketchup down at the Road-kill Cafe. Earth worms are a good source of protein. I've heard.

A pair of hawks commonly visit our backyard. They usually sit on the top of the fence. They will usually take turns sitting and then gliding down to the ground where they will walk around and eat whatever they find available. Plumage is normally dark brown. Yesterday when they arrived, their plumage was more a light grey color. Fascinating birds to watch. sincerely. bruce.

I can only think that his more preferred diet of other birds, rodents etc. has gotten scarce and he's not waiting to eat until he finds those. In the wild, you gotta do what ever it takes to survive. While worms may not be their preferred diet, it beats starving.

We have a lot of black buzzards around here (my uncle calls them the Gettysburg Air Force). They are kind of interesting to watch. I was driving north of Gettysburg on day and ahead of me were a couple of black buzzards in the middle of the road chowing down on some road kill. Usually birds take off when a moving car comes anywhere close to them. But these buzzards just took 2 steps back and let me pass.
