SOMETHING NEW ON THE PHONE

last year we replaced the house phones. usually don't carry her cell phone unless i'm going fishing/ shopping. it can block1,100 phone #'s. if no message on house phone I usually sometimes call them back, many say phone not in service, how do they call us if they have no phone service? need to find out how to do blocks on the cell phone.

....called me today telling me I was eligible for a free back brace and Medicare would pay for it. Gee, I've never heard that one before.
I see a commercial on TV for that all the time, also for a knee brace.

Go to the ap store and look for call blockers. There are hundreds of them. you might have to try more than one before you find one you like.

I've an Iphone 8. It has a do not disturb feature that I have set on so anyone NOT in my contact list goes straight to voice mail. If their robo calls back within 3 mins it will ring through but that's rare...

My phone is android and has a built in blocker...problem is, I end up filling up and have to clear it and start over.

I also have an app called callfilter...this let's you enter a portion of a phone number and block any that begin with xyz, contain xyz, or end with xyz….

I started getting calls from numbers that resembled my own phone number, so I blocked anything with the first few digits of my own number. It works great.

The Do Not Call list is a joke. I've been on that list for years.

Believe it or not My Son and Wife were talking about a certain item and five minutes later he gets a email about the exact item being on sale at the store.

I've had that happen also....it's creepy. I've also bought items online and soon after get a phishing email from a fake amazon, ebay, or paypal. Usually, the grammar is so poor that they're easy to spot.

If a call originates from a "real" landline (not VOIP) phone, the name and number you are presented comes from the telco.

I f the call originates from a computer system (I've set up dozens) the number / name you see is created or set by the computer server, so it can be literally anything the person who configures the system wants it to be. And some of the "wrong" formats are simply because they left out a digit, or were screwing with you.

I am retired now, but until recently still helped with these sorts of systems, and yes, the incidence of abuse is climbing rapidly.

If you have Siri or Google Assistant or Alexa or whatever device that helps you find stuff just by asking, it's the nature of the beast. In order to work, they have to be listening for you, to you. The "powers that be" know this and are taking advantage of it. It's being used as a marketing tool.

However, since it has to listen to/for you, it's listening 24/7. Anyone with access to the system can then listen to your home or anything within range of your phone.

This may sound paranoid, but it's not, it's just the way things are right now. These devices are not in my home and those features are turned off on my phone.

I did what you suggested at the Apple Store and got a negative response on the availability of call blockers.

If you have digital home phone service .. you can sign up on line for ' 'NoMorobo' service...It is free, started about 5 years. The Govt ran and contest with a $50k prize and his company won....You can check them out on line.....THe way it works is you set up an account on line. they have a data bank of millions of scam numbers... When someone calls your home it also rings on 'NOMOROBO computers if it's one of the scammer, the calls gets dropped and only rings your home phone once....which beat 5-6 rings and a long message.... It doesn't stop them all, but if someone is getting through you can add a number to their list and if enough people complain about it they add it......It's worth the time to look into it.....And like my father aways said it's FREE , and that's a good four letter word... You can also add your cell phones depending on the company you use..

I don't have anything on my land line which shows incoming numbers, but I do have an answering machine. Probably 80% of the incoming calls leave a little "beep" and no message. But robocalls still get through. I looked once, apparently NoMoRoBo doesn't work on AT&T land lines, only on VoiP service. On my cell phones, if a number is not on my contact list, I don't answer. If some politician wanted to get votes, he should run on a platform of "Capital Punishment For Robocallers."

Drifting a bit now, but I got this wonderful email this morning. $593 is an oddly specific amount. Wonder if he needs it to buy a new gun?

Hi!

As you may have noticed, I sent you an email from your account.
This means that I have full access to your account.

I've been watching you for a few months now.
The fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited.

If you are not familiar with this, I will explain.
Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device.
This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.

I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence.

Why your antivirus did not detect malware?
Answer: My malware uses the driver, I update its signatures every 4 hours so that your antivirus is silent.

I made a video showing how you satisfy yourself in the left half of the screen, and in the right half you see the video that you watched.
With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks.
I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.

If you want to prevent this,
transfer the amount of $593 to my bitcoin address (if you do not know how to do this, write to Google: "Buy Bitcoin").

My bitcoin address (BTC Wallet) is: 15SX5v86cqj3erE7HWagmXJfQ3MuQaRHdJ

After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear me again.
I give you 48 hours to pay.
I have a notice reading this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter.

Filing a complaint somewhere does not make sense because this email cannot be tracked like my bitcoin address.
I do not make any mistakes.

If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed.

Best regards!

It finally happened. Some scammer tried to call me using my own name and phone number. Just think how much I could get done if I really could be in two places at once like this scammer tried to imply.
