I've always been Anti-.40-Short & wimpy, due to being a
10mm kinda guy

But then I got my hands on a .40-S&W
that changed my mind about the whole shebang...
a Star Model 205 Ultrastar in .40-S&W.
I've been collecting Star pistols for awhile now, always knew they
were a great deal, since most folks had no clue about 'em, or had
heard that BS about Soft Spanish Steel spattered about by gun shop
knowitalls that were trying to Upsell folks into higher priced pistols.
In any case, the BS has long been proven wrong, but Star went OOB
due to Spanish Economical conditions & a fair amount of anti-gun fervor of the time.
Bill Clinton's gun ban of 1995 killed many gun manufacturers...no longer
able to sell their pistols in the biggest market in the world, and tarriff's on top...
many companies met their end by 2000.
Anyway, picked up one of each of the Ultrastars...9mm & .40-S&W,
then after cleaning, lubing, and inspecting, went the the range...
and was TOTALLY AMAZED! They soak felt recoil amazingly well!
The entire pistol was designed to reduce recoil, from the grip, to the
slide & spring ratio...the slide itself is a bit on the amazing side
The .40 Ultrastar has less felt recoil than a 5906. That is just freaky when
you first try it out. You literally look at your ammo and go, yeah, that's
the Buffalo Bore .40?? WOW!! Feels like nothing! I'm Impressed!
Why the heck nobody else has picked up on what these pistols have achieved
is a bit amazing...shocked that nobody else is using a similar slide & spring system,
as it's not much different from anything on the market now, it's just designed better!
And they opened me up to the potential of .40-S&W, whcih, admittedly
it's got a lot of potential still. The reason it took off was mainly two things,
the FBI needed something easier to handle than 10mm, and the low round
count forced on people by the Bill Clinton Gun Ban of 1995 really
made .40 shine...now that the ban has expired, but several states
still have Draconic Gun Laws, a single-stack .40 is still a great option
in those areas. Loaded hot, it's a better option than 9mm could ever hope to be.
