Sometimes the pawn shop pays off!

TTSH Don't give up on your luck as when you least expect something good to happen to you, it will fall right into your lap. "Never Give Up"
Well, I did luck out this morning with a Groupon for another 3-month mini-membership at one of the local indoor ranges... just so long as my old, damaged, tinnitus-ravaged ears can take it. :p I'll be trying hard again to figure out how to avoid the shotgun blasters and mega-magnums crowd. :o

But other than that, my luck has mostly been in the crapper lately. I've had a lot more losses and disappointments than victories. :o I'll try again today when I head west, but I'm not optimistic. :( Gotta turn my luck around soon or I'll have to find another expensive hobby to go broke on. :D

Well played for that kind of price. Believe it or not, I personally have never been a pawn shop but think you have changed my mind.

Pawn Shops Still Fun

I still enjoy trolling pawn shops, especially those near upscale neighborhoods. The inventory these days is mostly trash and always overpriced, but..........occassionally. I still remember the glory years just after the Brady Bill and background checks were put in place. Many a hapless pawn customer could not redeem his firearm because he couldn't pass a background check. That's how I got a $425 Python, a $300 Gold Cup, and a $500 Citori with case. Even discounting for 20 year old prices, the deals were very good. Pawnbrokers will always negotiate, and people still ditch old stuff in favor of the newest black plastic.

Precisely why NOW is the time to be hitting them...all the mentally deficient
are dumping their .40-S&W pistols since "The FBI" has decided to
go back to 9mm for political reasons...which has been leading to some
mighty nice deals on .40's of all brands lately ;)

this is true around here....went in my localest pawn shop and of about the 20 or so handguns .....1 .22...2 9mm...1 .38...all the rest were .40's.....NO .45acp:(

What a deal! And a heck of a carry piece in .45. I think we're all a little green with envy on this one.

Even so, 40's of all mfr's are not moving right now. The "mentally deficient" want 9mm. They feel the 9mm gun carrying a few more rounds than the same gun in 40 is a plus. Also the 40 having much more recoil than a similar 9mm concerns our lady customers. And technology has definitely improved 9mm self defense ammo vs 20 years ago. So if you are a 40 fan, it's a great time to go shopping, but for me, 9mm outsells 40 10 to 1. GARY

Its the same up here with the 9's been the hotter sales item of the two. The ammo is easier to obtain and cheaper for us as well.

.40 S&W seems to have fallen out of favor. Some agencies are moving "up" .45 ACP, some are moving "down" to 9mm. I've never been a .40 fan, so it doesn't affect me either way.

If I were a .40 kind of guy, I'd be scooping up a lot of cheap ammo and guns right about now.

I've always been Anti-.40-Short & wimpy, due to being a
10mm kinda guy ;) But then I got my hands on a .40-S&W
that changed my mind about the whole shebang...
a Star Model 205 Ultrastar in .40-S&W.

I've been collecting Star pistols for awhile now, always knew they
were a great deal, since most folks had no clue about 'em, or had
heard that BS about Soft Spanish Steel spattered about by gun shop
knowitalls that were trying to Upsell folks into higher priced pistols.
In any case, the BS has long been proven wrong, but Star went OOB
due to Spanish Economical conditions & a fair amount of anti-gun fervor of the time.
Bill Clinton's gun ban of 1995 killed many gun manufacturers...no longer
able to sell their pistols in the biggest market in the world, and tarriff's on top...
many companies met their end by 2000.

Anyway, picked up one of each of the Ultrastars...9mm & .40-S&W,
then after cleaning, lubing, and inspecting, went the the range...
and was TOTALLY AMAZED! They soak felt recoil amazingly well!
The entire pistol was designed to reduce recoil, from the grip, to the
slide & spring ratio...the slide itself is a bit on the amazing side :)

The .40 Ultrastar has less felt recoil than a 5906. That is just freaky when
you first try it out. You literally look at your ammo and go, yeah, that's
the Buffalo Bore .40?? WOW!! Feels like nothing! I'm Impressed!

Why the heck nobody else has picked up on what these pistols have achieved
is a bit amazing...shocked that nobody else is using a similar slide & spring system,
as it's not much different from anything on the market now, it's just designed better!

And they opened me up to the potential of .40-S&W, whcih, admittedly
it's got a lot of potential still. The reason it took off was mainly two things,
the FBI needed something easier to handle than 10mm, and the low round
count forced on people by the Bill Clinton Gun Ban of 1995 really
made .40 shine...now that the ban has expired, but several states
still have Draconic Gun Laws, a single-stack .40 is still a great option
in those areas. Loaded hot, it's a better option than 9mm could ever hope to be.

Amazing, isn't it? A cartridge with the nickname "Short and Wimpy" fell out of favor mainly due to the fact that it kicks too much. What is wrong with that picture? :D

I still say that I shoot my .40's better than I shoot my 9mm's... although I aim to retest that statement in coming months now that I have an indoor range mini-membership again. :)

And while I say that 9mm is fine with me because the smallest mouse guns of that caliber fit so easily in my pants pocket, I also say that if the stuff were really ever to hit the fan wherein I actually needed a carry gun, I'd wish like Hell that I had one of my .40's with me. :o Duh! :(

And yes, a modern 9mm plastic wonder pistol that holds a zillion rounds doesn't do you a hoot of good in a place like loony moonbat Massachusetts where 10-rounds is the rule on all post-ban magazines... so why not optimize those 10-rounds with something a bit more powerful if modern plastic is your thing? :p

But will I ever add more .40's to the collection? Other than the CHP gun, probably not... and even for that, I have to sell at least one to get one. Strict family rule. With demand so pitifully low and still dropping, .40's are not good investments these days.

The problem with most firearms in .40S&W is that they weren't designed for that round or the round designed for them. I have a S&W 4006 and a S&W CS 40. In the 4006, it is no worse than shooting a 9mm or a .45ACP. In the CS 40, it is a whole world of difference in the felt recoil. After 1 mag, it is time to clean the CS 40 and put it back in the holster.

I don't normally go to pawn shops but I might just to see if I can find another stainless 4006. Can't do it today because I'm awaiting a shipment. :)
