South Carolina to use execution by Firing Squad

In Utah years ago the DOC Rented Model '94 Winchesters in .30-30 from Gallenson's, a local pawn shop and sporting goods retailer in Salt Lake City. They reserved a group of guns for the DOC that they would not sell. They were used for several executions over the years. I don't know if they still have an agreement with DOC.

In reality, do either gun or caliber matter so long as they are adequate? The Model '94s were used because of their simplicity of use since the shooters selected for an execution were not necessarily particularly familiar with firearms, and the caliber was adequate. As I recall the firing squad consisted of 10 shooters. I do not know how the shooters were selected, but I do know they were not volunteers or prison employees.

And old tale ......Some were loaded with blanks.....So no really knew if thay had a blank or a bullet.....So the tale goes......All the rifles were pre-loaded so no shooter knew what their rifle contained......Is this fact or fiction???

I’d say fiction, as even a rank amateur could tell if he had fired a blank or a factory round.

That was the common belief. I don't know if it was true or not! Supposedly the real reason was so none of the shooters were criminally or civilly liable if there were a later wrongful death lawsuit or criminal charges if it was later determined the person executed had been wrongfully convicted and was actually innocent of the crime.

About time....

The electric chair is an unreliable wreck and lethal injection is controlled by people unwilling to use it. Hanging and the firing squad are very reliable. Unless the makers of ropes and bullets get controlled by the same crowd this ought to work just fine.

PS: I sat in Old Sparky when I was a kid. They were trying to show us where we could end up but the message was apparently lost on me.:D

In Washington State, in 1983, Mitchell Rupe was convicted of murdering two bank tellers in a 1981 $4000 bank robbery. At over 400 pounds, he was judged too heavy to hang. He was off the charts of the US Army execution manual, which the State used as a guide. The judges were convinced that he was heavy enough that he might become separated from his head, or, visa versa! Fortunately, he died in prison after a long illness due to his condition. This gave the victims relatives some overdue closure.
Rupe's attorney gave a different opinion of his client:

Attorney Roger Hunko of Port Orchard, who also represented Rupe, offered a different view.

"Mitch, when I represented him, was always a gentleman, a very intelligent man," Hunko said. "He regretted what he did that got him in trouble."

As a result of the outcome, the State changed the method of execution to lethal injection, with hanging as an option.

Rick

And as far as I know, since then only one condemned prisoner has chosen the rope swing. Westley Allan Dodd in '93. Many people protested over the method, saying hanging was cruel and unusual. Me? I thought fire should have been an option.

What gun and caliber is best for firing squads

Anything good for bears :D

A C4 suppository would be effective. Could be televised from the local landfill or quarry. That said, I am good with the firing squad.

I have always championed for veterinarians doing lethal injections. They have the best stuff and the most experience.

Oklahoma botched a lethal injection really bad a few years ago. I can't comprehend how that can happen, you should just put the guy to sleep and inject him in several places with the most lethal cocktail of many different poisons. I've screwed up in my life several times but I guarantee I could get a fast execution done right. If I choose a firing squad of 3 guys I think I would prefer shotguns with 12 ga. Magnum OO Buckshot. Rifles hitting the heart seem like it may not be very quick with several seconds of oxygen still in the brain.

Will they give him a cigarette?

Last meal from a five star Michelin restaurant?
Seriously though, I’ve been present when several of our dogs have been euthanized and I witnessed no pain or distress.
I don’t understand why authorities can’t get lethal injection correct.

Single barrel JC Higgins 12 ga. Make sure perp knows we are spending absolute MINIMUM to get rid of him.

Thinking about using a vets office to handle the executions. Since most animals are under 100 lbs. Would the same drugs work on an average size human?? And then who would figure out the dosage and hope it works!! Just some thoughts!!

Any anasthesiologist could come up with an effective lethal drug cocktail. Wasn’t there a recent execution using Nitrogen? I need to look it up.
