spilled loctite on polymer

I read loctite weakens plastic and makes it brittle. I spilled loctite on the frame of a sheild. It has probably been on the frame for weeks. Does loctite damage polymer?

Well Loctite comes in a plastic bottle. So it isn't death to all plastics. I can verify that 242 will destroy ABS. You need to be careful.

Did the Loctite eat into the plastic? Did it effect the surface texture? When you cleaned it up, can you tell where the spill was? If not, I'd bet it's OK.

red loctite--the kind that comes in the tube with xs sights. cleaned it off, looks greasy but no other noticeable change in texture.

There are 3 types of Red Loctite and if by now U cant see or feel any damage then most likely it did not! I would however lube really good the whole grip with CLP!

Loctite can also damage Blueing on a gun!

The type of loctite that comes with xs sights is not a super crazy industrial type... its 271 or 272 but loctite also only "activates" when used on metal and it needs close tolerances and very little oxygen to kick off. its called an Anaerobic reaction. so if it was out in the open its not likely to cause any issues.

It was probably still kinda gooey when you found it right?

When building/rebuilding a small block Chevy engine with the 2 piece main seal you have to use an ANAEROBIC SEALANT on the main bearing cap where it joins the block.

I only know the word because I was curious one day why some of the loctite that had leaked on my bench was still all gooey after probably weeks of being there and I looked up some info on how the stuff works. I'm a bit of a sponge for useless information

Not trying to be funny here, or smart-alecky...but why did you leave it to set up on the frame for weeks?

But to answer your question: I have no idea if it damages polymer or not. Others know more about the properties of Loctite than I do.

I left the tube of loctite propped upright on the frame after the installation of the sight. Left gun in basement for 2 weeks. Came back to see the tube had spilled and loctite seeped between the handle and table.

Good ole Chevys with the ole the two pices seals. Those use to leak as much oil as the Ole A M F Harleys lol

Not to defend Harleys, but Panheads had drip oilers for the primary chain. The excess oil was allowed to escape via a drain hole in the case. So, not technically a leak. But they would always mark their territory [emoji846]
