Spitting

A friend has a Rossi (Braztech) .357 snubby that he is enamoured with because it has a good trigger and is extremely accurate. I've shot it-he is correct. The timing is impecable Endshake is very small. Barrel cylinder gap is a bit large but not huge (calibrated eyeball says .006 but I haven't pulled out the feeler gauges.) The thing spits horribly. You do NOT want to stand beside the shooter. FWIW the barrel is uncrowned- inside edge of the muzzle is very sharp .....but holding a sheet of paper beside the gun on firing shows that the big issue is at the b/c gap.

Any suggestions?
 
It spits and it is accurate? Ain't that kinda unusual? Does it spit lead or powder? You may just have some nasty ammo and oversize B/C gap. Not an expert, just asking.
 
It's a Rossi (Taurus' ugly stepsister) get rid of and get a Smith (Cinderella).
Seriously though it sounds weird that you are getting any accuracy if the spitting is that bad? What are the group sizes? I would get out the feeler gauges anyway just to check, also I wonder about the timing being just a hair off. I don't know of too many people working on these, I know our local gunsmith wont even touch them, he sends them off to where ever it is they came from.
 
Check these things:

* B/C Gap may be more than you think - measure with feeler gauge

* Cylinder alignment may be off - check with a Range - Rod

* Forcing cone may be leaded up, have sharp edges, or has an improper angle of entry.

If all is correct,,,bbl gap, timing, forcing cone angle, and cylinder/bbl allignment,,but it still spits, the forcing cone may have been cut too deeply.
Making the entry diameter at the breech end too large by cutting the forcing cone (angle) in too deep allows gas and powder to spit badly to the sides.
It can allow the bullet to do the same in some instances, especially cast bullets if they are very soft.

There's a difference of a few .000" between acceptable and not in a forcing cone diameter. Each of the several different angles of cut used now has a different go/no go standard.

Might be the problem,,might not. Just a thought.
 
Thank you for the replies. Just curious-Why was the thread moved? I know that it isn't a S&W but it is a gunsmithing question.
