Reference the CRC and other products like this be sure to take precautions. The MSDS indicates this is mainly Acetone, with a bit of Toluene mixed in. Bottom line.....use in a well ventilated area, and protect yourself and your family from contact or breathing the fumes.

Please read and follow the warnings on the label, and if you anticipate getting this stuff on your hands, wear gloves. Protect your eyes too. These dangerous compounds are very flammable, and are absorbed through the skin.

I guess my question is, why would you use these flammable and arguably dangerous, pressurized chemicals when other "safe" products are readily available?

Carter, chemical sprays like this are an outside event for me. it is the prelude to compressed air to really clean it out. Your point on safety is well taken. TX

BrakCleaner RED (the chlorinated) kind is TCE which is what Brownells sells by the gal for decreasing

The Green cleaner(non chlorinated) is highly Flammable and has acetone which I do not use on plastic guns.

People freak out over "chlorinated" but just use gloves eye protection in a well ventilated area (for ANY of them!)

The store brand like at Advanced is sometime cheaper than the name brand, sometimes its more

Either one is OK on metal guns

I'm not sure about all CRC products but the one I have pictured is a non-flammable type so it probably doesn't contain acetone or toluene.
I would still recommend outdoor use and gloves though.

The big danger with the chlorinated ones is if you spray something to clean it, then heat it with a torch or other means. When heated, it becomes phosgene gas, which will kill you in a few breaths. It's bad for you not heated, but safe enough with normal precautions.

I'm one of those guys that doesn't worry much about inhaling fumes when working with chemicals but I will tell you from experience that chlorine gas has my total respect. Be VERY careful if you are around it and it can literally take your breath away.

I generally use a old hair dryer for evaporating cleaners, it just seems safer then a open flame.

It may get used for a lot of other cleaning chores in the shop. Just trying to keep my S&W Forum friends safe.

Green or non chlorinated is highly flammable.
Either one will kill you, they both carry a "signal word" DANGER!

Once either one flashes off in a few seconds to a minute, neither is gonna cause a problem

Use Simple Green and all will be good :)

I have on my shelf but seldom use Brake Cleaner unless I have exhausted all other less toxic options. It does work well but should ONLY be used with gloves, a good mask and only outdoors. I also have a can of Acetone but once again I only use it as a last resort!

BTW I always opt to use liquids in a pour or drip can rather than their Aerosol Brothers IF the option or choice is there. Why breath in over spray and more fumes if not necessary?

Wear eye protection; one gent got backsplashed spraying into a barrel and he basically lost his vision in that eye
