Ballistol good for blued guns??

Someone did a video on YT about different gun oils and ran tests like treating bare steel plates side by side with different gun oils and treatments and induced rusting to see which was best for that. Although the rust inducement might have been extreme or more than typically encountered. Also seen vid tests of CLP and oils to see which resists friction and wear the most. You could say, the tests don't lie...maybe. Not promoting any particular product in the vids.

It's Mineral Oil which is Petro Oil,
It's the most highly refined level ofPetro Oil. Mineral Oil is in the edible catagory and is also sold as Baby Oil.

The odor in Ballistol is from the spice Anise.
Sometimes called a Licorise smell/taste. The oil is very commonly used in medicines , baking, soap, etc.

Some other common stuff in there too IIRC. Nothing earth shattering, nothing that can hurt much of anything on or in a firearm or you.
Won't do much to leather or fabric either.

Yes, mineral oil is exactly that. Not vegetable oil. It is a low viscosity lubricating oil refined from crude oil. And it is the main ingredient of Ballistol. I do not know if it is baby oil or not. Would have to look it up. BTW, "3-in-1" oil refers to "cleans-lubricates-preserves." Like CLP.

The Germans develeoped Ballistol during the late years of WWII when petroleum products were at a premium. It was envisioned as an oil that soldiers could use on their weapons, leather, boots and other gear. It works the same way today.

I've used mineral oil to lubricate knives that I might actually use on food or for cleaning fish or game. It prevents rust and won't hurt you if you actually consume a little. I don't like the idea of eating gun oil.

Just curious. Has anyone ever thought of putting some Peppermint Oil or Cinnamon Oil in the Ballistol to make it smell better?

Mineral oil was once a commonly used laxative. You can guess how it worked.

Ballistol is great. I carry it in my gun bag and spray it onto each gun that I take to the range.

Shot bullseye 20 years ago and Hammerli recommended Breakfree CLP on the 280. Figured if Hammerli said it's good it's all I use on guns since.

Never tried Ballistol and never knew it was a natural oil, interesting. Larry

I used it until I discovered G96 CLP. It's a modern version of Ballistol but without the smell and works just as good . My wife even likes the smell .

G96 has replaced my Ballistol as well for most purposes.

Still have supplies of Ballistol, Hoppes #9, Hoppes Elite, MPro7 Cleaner, MPro7 Gun Oil and RemOil...so, should be pretty well covered for most any CLP need in the foreseeable future.
