A few weeks ago our area Chamber of Commerce facilitated a photo contest sponsored by a local bank. The theme of the photo contest was "Spring is in the air" and the purpose of the contest was to get state wide photographers to contribute spring themed photographs so that the Chamber can use the winning photo on the cover of their quarterly slick paged magazine due to be published in May. The rules of the contest said each photographer could only submit one photo.
My wife was in the local bank a couple of weeks ago and the bank branch manager brought the contest to her attention. She knew my wife and I usually enter photos into the County Fair photo contest each fall with a degree of success, and encouraged her to enter a photo. "Ask your husband to enter one, some of his pictures are pretty good too."
I've not really had time the past few weeks to do much photography and the weather hasn't cooperated either, but one morning the sun was out and my wife said she was going out to check on our bluebird boxes and take a few pictures.
"Want to come along?" she asked.
"Sure," so I grabbed my camera and we stepped out into the cool morning air with a cloudless sky. We have half a dozen bluebird boxes scattered around the homestead and based on the activity we saw that morning it looked like they all have active pairs building nests. As my wife was snapping away with her camera mounted on a monopod, I spied a pair of eastern bluebirds sitting together on a limb, so I took a quick snapshot before they flew off. Turns out it was the only picture I took during our walkabout that morning.
A few days later as the deadline for the contest drew near my wife asked me to help her decide which of her pictures to submit, then she asked if I was going to send one in. I said I'd not thought about it and besides I'd not taken any spring themed pictures, mainly because it was still winter and spring hadn't really sprung yet.
"Didn't you take any pictures the other day when we were out?" she asked.
"I think I only took one or two pictures," I replied.
"Well, send 'em to me and I'll enter one for you." I sent her the one picture I'd taken.
I received an email notification that of the over 500 entries the picture she submitted on my behalf won the contest. I showed the email to my wife and she just rolled her eyes at me. With a jesting tone she said, "you wouldn't have even entered the contest if I hadn't sent the picture in for you."
