The square butt J frames may not be as concealable as their round butt brethren, however they are great shooters and I like their light weight. That little extra bit of grip makes them more controllable for me.

Here is my 34-1 4" (.22LR) with numbered grips (technically it dates to 1981), and;
the 36-1 3" (.38 Special) (1971-72) that I just picked up a few days ago.

I prefer the SB J-frame over the RB, but I really like the RB targets (banana) over either of the standard grips. They point much more naturally for me making a first round hit a sure thing.

I only have one, a model 63 no dash that I bought in 1979. And being that I've had it all this time I guess you can see that i really like it!

My square-butt 36-1 ('71-'72) didn't even have much of a cylinder ring when I purchased it several years ago. But, I bought it to shoot, so it has one now.

The model 36s with J-prefix serial numbers came along after diamond stocks had been dropped (1969), but I felt this little gun had to have them. The pair it wears now have serial numbers that say 1951.

I have five "J" frames, but only one square butt. It's an early "flat latch" Model 36. I traded it off two weeks ago in a deal on a Nickle, Model 27-2. I went back two days later and got it back. I couldn't stand to let it go:)

I don't blame you one bit for getting it back. I have an old '55 or '56 four-screw flat latch pre-36. Like me, it's a bit beat up, but its home is right here with me. I can find a 27-2 any day of the week. Not so with an old flat latch. And you can't judge a book by its cover either...this old gun is in fine mechanical condition and is an excellent shooter.

I have a few, but no pictures: 2" Chief Special Target, one of the first 100 made, 36 2" nickel, 36-1 blue, 35-1 blue, 60 3" heavy barrel, 63 and a 51. I had 2 others that were stolen, a 2" 34-1 and a 4" 651. I only have two RB J frames, a model 40 and a model 940 2". I like the SB guns, but I must say that I like the rubber grips that came on the 940 even better.

The OP mentions he likes the SB Js and everybody chimes in with photos of their 'children.' Tell me Js are not great-looking and great little guns. If you can, you're not a J-hound!

True, there are more custom grip options for the RB than the SB (at least there used to be), but the SB looks perfect on a 3-4" barreled J. Super guns, people! Love em all! You got class!
