I grew up in Wolf & Klar country, so a 3rd model would hold some extra meaning for me. But alas, I should have thought of that 30 years ago, when at least some were still below four figures.
I know this is an old thread, but here is a West Virginia State Police S&W model 686 that I just picked up yesterday.
I have a Connecticut State Police blued model 66. pretty tough to find, but I see one other posted above. Duty weapons and commemorative are vastly different IMHO.
Illinois State Police 5" Heavy Barrel from 1957.

These P&R 66s & 66-1s are from New Hampshire State Police, Wyoming Highway Patrol, Minnesota State Patrol and the Ga. Alcohol & Tobacco Taxation Unit (Dept. of Revenue):
Here is a 1941 vintage M&P that letters to the Vermont State Police:
....the .38-44s are from Arkansas State Police & Colorado State Patrol. The 686 is from the Iowa State Police. The 4" 65 is from the Mass Registry -Motor Vehicles which merged into the state police. The 3" 65 is a Ga. Parole Board gun.

Do you have a date on the Mn trooper? Reason i ask is being a Mn boy myself I know it's been a long time since anyone has used the Minn abbreviation.

Great thread. Here are some crummy cell phone pics of a few Arkansas State Police revolvers. The first is a 38/44 HD from the 1950s, the other is a Model 60 presumably carried by plainclothes officers in the 1980s. I need to add the ASP Model 66 to my collection if anyone has a source. There is also supposedly a Model 19 example from rare use in the 1970s. I'm a buyer for any Arkansas examples, either new arrivals or duplicates to my own collection...plus I have friends looking.

My Highway patrol guns are both 3 inch model 65s. A 65-2 from Massachusettes State Police manufactured in 1981 and a 65-3 for detectives in the NYPD manufactured in 1983. The MSP gun has the lettering down the back strap and the NYPD lettering is under the cylinder. Both guns in excellent shape. I also have a 64-1 chambered in .357 that I am convinced was one of the 750 made for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. It has no markings and the SCSW states thats how they shipped. This gun was later to become the model 65.
I don't have pics of them or I would post them. If you know more about the Oklahoma Highway patrol gun please share. I have seen them with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol logo, but I believe those are the commemoratives.

..........HDs. This one from the 50s also. The Arkansas State Rangers were formed in 1935, and were issued Colt 1911A1s in .38 Super. In 1937 they were designated the Arkansas State Police, and their strength was increased from the original 13 men to 50. They transitioned to the Heavy Duty then. The first versions were also roll marked on the back strap with "Arkansas State Police". They were 5 inch blued versions with a lanyard ring.
The HD remained the issue sidearm until around 1968.
Most of the survivors have been in the bluing tank a lot.

Florida Highway Patrol 27-2 5" nickel. 500 were issued to troopers. Glad to see the upper brass appreciated the best S&W had to offer.

This isn't a duty weapon but it was sold to me with the story that it was used for training by the Oklahoma State Police. (I know, buy the gun - not the story.) This Model 14 shoots very well (as most of them do) but the kicker was after I had made the deal, the seller brings out these beautiful target grips that he said were included in the price.

From a retired MSP trooper's records District 2300, which is SW Minn., received the Model 66s to replace the 4" HB Model 10s on Feb 19, 1980.
Their personal Model 66s, the ones with the MSP shield on the sideplate, were ordered in May 1976, $130 was paid at that time and an additional $19.40 in Aug. 1976. On about June 8, 1979 they were delivered.
Dec. 1, 1982 the Model 681 was issued and all Model 66s turned in.
In the early 1960s 4" HB Model 10s were issued replacing the 6" .38 M&Ps and the few remaining 38/44s.

To add to Dr. C's photos above, here is a North Carolina State Highway Patrol 66-1 shipped in 1980. Thanks to him, I learned that these replaced Model 19 nickel 4" barrel guns, and preceded 686's during the late 1970s/early 1980s period. This is not a commemorative; it is likely a retirement gun, a never issued spare, or was issued to a trooper who for whatever reason never carried it, as it is in pristine condition. It came in the same kind of dark-finished wood presentation box as the ones shown by Dr. C above.
Not an issued sidearm, but 40 plus years ago I knowed an Alabama State Trooper whose personal revolver was a nickel 6 1/2" M29. He also carried a 14" M97 Winchester. That barrel came right to the end of the magazine tube.

Michigan State Police issued these Model 66 .357 Mags to Troopers who shot Distinguished Expert. Department regulations mandated .38 Special ammo only however.
After issuing about 80 .357 Mags, they were afraid Troopers would try to carry .357 rounds in them so they started to issue the .38 Spec model 67-1
I bought the Model 66 from the widow of our range commander after he passed away. The model 67-1 was given to me by my daughter who retired from the Michigan State Police as a 1st Lieutenant.

It just seems an issued 686 is more respectable choice for law an order over the standard auto loader, but that's probably just my bias towards revolvers.
