wow. what do you do if the pistol is inherited? I have numerous firearms from my father's side of the family. Suppose I want to qualify and carry my ancestors 1858 Remington? Sure isn't a receipt for that. And I have inherited firearms without ser#s. 150 year old ghost gun?

The NJ law was just changed.
Before, if you came from out of state to live in NJ with a handgun you did not have to register it. If you lived in NJ and inherited a gun in NJ I think you had to register it.
Now, with the new NJ laws I think it is necessary to register all handguns if you did not go through the NJ purchase permit process to buy it in the first place.
Long and short of it. If you want a carry permit in NJ make sure you can show you own the gun ( and make sure that you jump through the hoops for ALL the handguns you possess).
PLEASE BE CAREFUL The NJ firearm laws are a trap for the unwary - with the result for violation a felony conviction, loss of liberty and loss of 2A rights everywhere forever.

the 3 reference thing is very dumb. people can just forge it or hire someone to write it. what do they expect to get out of 3 friends kissing your ***? it's a very subjective requirement. moral character requirements can be established objectively via criminal records

The police sends a letter to the address of the three references and asks them to respond to several questions.
It would be a barrier to someone who does not know three people (presumably non-felons) willing and able to respond.

Who is going to issue the permit? NJSP, the county clerk, a judge, local police chief, the CLEO who has jurisdiction?

In NY a police officer personally interviews the references. No letters.

Years ago my grandfather owned a summer cottage on the NJ shore my family used to share ( many fond memories), FF years later as an adult I rode up with a buddy who had to change his plans suddenly, I ended up flying home and left my CCW model 10 snub at the house figuring would just get it next year, then 9/11 happens, grandpa passes and before I could get back hurricane Sandy wrecks the house.
My uncle was removing anything salvageable and calls me up...what should I do with the S&W? I said keep it....oh no NJ laws blah blah...ok pick any local gun shop and send me their info I will fwd my local ffl info and prepay shipping etc, you just have to drop it off.....oh no NJ laws blah blah blah.....f
Finally said just toss it in the canal...bye, click.

I know my gun well enough to sleep with it.
Having left NJ in the rearview mirror over 42 years ago I can only marvel that in my lifetime they have come this far. With all the "institutional stupid" that has ruled for all of the 20th and most of the 21st centuries this is nothing short of a minor miracle. Florida was a little apprehensive when they went shall issue in the late 80's until it has become quite normalized today. There is always hope no matter where you live in AMERICA. Joe

On Monday I drove 65 miles to a place across the border in Pennsylvania where they had plenty of openings for appointments to get fingerprinted. Indentogo in Elkins, PA. Very professional and quick.
Now it’s wait for the local Police to send letters to my three references asking if I have enough moral character to exercise my Rigjts under the Second Amendment.
