I guess I haven't changed my own oil in a while. Went to AutoZone today to buy 5 quarts of 10W30 and a filter for my GMC Sierra pickup.

Almost five bucks a quart for conventional oil!

They had a deal....5+ quart jug of Pennzoil and a Fram filter....$17.99 plus tax.

I think having it done at Valvoline Instant Oil Change is worth it!

WoW, thats about what I pay for Mobile 1, at Wally World. I let the dealer change my oil, but I furnish the oil. Cuts the price way down and they check everything alot closer than the instant oil change places do.

I get a full L-O-F during my yearly state inspection. I get the basic 2500mi change done on my '95 Chevy Silverado at a local Pennzoil drive thru. Twenty some bucks , but they give a Vets discount. No crawling on the ground , no mess.

I do my motorcycles myself.

Going rate for a synthetic oil change for my '04 GMC Seirra is 80 bucks.5 quarts and a filter from Mobil 1 is about 40 bucks on sale.Where they get me is for the extra quart,It's never on sale.
I have a friend with a lift.:D

I just paid $8.99 a quart for the synthetic I run in my commercial zero turn mower. I know there are cheaper oils, but I depend on this mower to pay the bills.

Northstar engines take 7.5 quarts of oil.
I have three cars with Northstar engines.
'Nuff said. :D

I went back to changing my own oil a couple of years ago. I'd swallow the $45-$50 cost but when I inspected my brakes I discovered they weren't lubing the ball joints/tie rod ends.

Now my oil change is $20-$25 and I know my vehicles are well maintained.

Seems like Auto Zone and Advance Auto over-price most of their oil, except whatever ones they're promoting. I buy their synthetic oil on promotion typically 5 qts of Mobil 1, or Castrol Syntec, with a filter for $30. (Semi synthetic is around $23, and regular oil about $18.)
Sometimes Advance Auto and Auto Zone run multiple specials but only online. Like Mobil 1 reg. $6.99 for $5.99, with orders over $75 getting free shipping, plus a 20% discount on orders over $100. That's when I stock up.

Wally World has 5 qt jugs of Valvoline for $13.50 each here in Denver Co area.

Yeah, Castrol, too. I buy my oil at WW, but I have to go to AutoZone for filters. I guess WW doesn't think people with old Mercedes change their own oil. ;)

I'd love to be able to buy five quarts of Mobile 1 for $20. Where was that deal? The last I bought was $35. :(

Until they cross thread your drain plug...

... or the filter...

IF they actually replace the filter instead of wiping it off & chargeing for a new one...

or any number of other things.

I wouldn't take my lawnmower to one of those quickie oil changers...

If you are fortunate enough to have a vehicle that you can just change the oil filter element- usually these places will cross thread the oil filter cover or even crack it trying to get it off with an incorrect size wrench. I've seen it- that's why I do our own. :)

Probably 25yrs ago , when the first Jiffy Lube opened up in my old home town , (a small service station had become a franchise) , and my Pop got a coupon for a free oil change. He had a couple nice cars and told me to take his '67 T-Bird to get the free oil change. I told him I'd change it , but after a brief arguement , I did what I was told. Sure enough , they stripped the drain bolt. Tried to say it was stripped , which just set me off! I also knew this was somehow gonna be my fault in Pops eyes. So after going and getting an oversize plug , which still leaked , I told them to finish up. Guess I had them all upset , because they slammed the hood with that big fill/vent cap still on top of the air cleaner , which put a dent in the hood!

So much for a FREE oil change!

But the place I go to is Vet owned and operated. Been going for over 5yrs. They're good mechanics. I even let them change my automatic transmission fluid , transfer case and differential oil every 50K.

get used to those high prices guys, it will only get worse!
i've been changing my own oil for years. it wasn't that long ago, just a few years, that i could find penzoil or valvoline specials almost anytime for around a buck a quart.
those days are gone..................

Interesting....My Dad had a friend in Las Vegas that had an automotive shop in the 60s, Harrison Automotive.
Harry had a sign on his wall.
"You Wouldn't Take a Steak To A Restaurant And Ask Them To Cook It.
Don't Bring Your Oil In Here And Ask Me To Change It".

Somehow, that made sense.

Best,
Gary

In 2002 I bought a 2001 Dodge 1500. It was a short bed and last '01 they had so I got a deal on it. The dealership was maybe 3 miles from me and was old established but very small by todays standards. I took the truck there for an oil change one time. I took a look out in the service area cause I noticed the hood on my truck was up but never left the ground. They were pumping the old oil out thru the dip stick tube. I kid you not. The dealer has been closed about 3 yrs. now.

That is a very common and good way of doing it if they are using the correct equipment. Go to a Mercedes Benz shop and you will see they do the same thing. They use a wand that goes all the way to the bottom of the pan to drain more oil out than using the plug. More and more shops are going to that method.

I use a Pela 6000 oil extractor and go through the dipstick tube. Worked great on i/o marine motors and now I use it on everything that I change myself.
