Stimulus Checks

Have not received a income tax refund in years.
However, we receive our SS checks via direct deposit.
Not sure if we get a paper check or if we will receive
a direct deposit.

My tax lady says I won't get anything...made too much last year. And I was looking at investing it in a nice new to me Smith....

Best Regards, Les

I think I got the triple whammy and cursed to be the bottom of the barrel.
We filed taxes this past March 15 with Turbo Tax for our return and had turbo take their payment from our return. I'm a 1099 small business filer. And last year started S.S. and get auto deposits. "Get my Payments" don't recognize me. I'm fortunate I have shelter and can put food on the table.

Went to the bank yesterday PM and got our handout! I was the only person in the bank other than the two counter workers and manager.

I live in the middle of two branches, at least a 25 mile ride to the closest and a bit more for the next closest.

Funny thing about that is all branches of that bank that I have gone to have signs on the doors. No wearing of anything that obstructs or hides your face are allowed to be worn. It specifies masks and any clothing item that makes it hard for the cameras to do their job.

Of course due to King Andrews (Cuomo) proclamation/edict/orders I had my wife built mask covering up. As I walked through the door I said to the manager "mask on or off" He said with a laugh, on, you look like a honest person.

Even with the mask on the one teller recognized me and said Hi Mr. Lakesider as I walked to the counter!.

I have a very different take on this. I will get nothing from the Stimulus Package and I thank God I live in a time and place when my family can do well enough not to need this money. I don't begrudge a penny of it to those who need it. This is the government doing its job in a once in a lifetime crisis; it's also 3400 years of Judaeo-Christian tradition. It has nothing to do with socialism or communism. As Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "Taxes are the price we pay for civilization."

It is not the government's job to confiscate and then redistribute people's money. The government is not a theocracy.

Free people should have the freedom to spend or give their treasure as they think best.

got ours in mail today - retired on SSI + filed tax return - every one I know on SSI + SSDI I know that did not file taxes have not received theirs yet -

This answers my question for my Mom. She's in a Memory Care Facility and I do not file taxes for her. Her SS checks are direct deposited. I haven't seen hers yet.

...one's money would be better spent on a mortgage payment (s), food, medicine, reducing your credit card debt, etc rather than for an addition to your collection.

Life's responsibilities? I guess it's definition has changed nowadays

I'm ahead a good bit on my bills, I'm still working, have a safety net of funds to fall back on, and the only debt I have is a truck loan that I'm ahead on. If uncle Sam wants to give me money to spend I'm happy to oblige. I spent a decent portion of it buying American made archery equipment.

Must be nice, we still haven't received ours yet. We have been out of work since March 20th....

No mortgage pymt, CC debt and such, thank the Lord. We do have to eat on occasion though, and meds........ that's a different story. Any time the checking account starts to build up, the prescriptions go up.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I am happy that 4 of our 5 children received some much needed extra cash. The 5th didn't qualify which is a blessing itself. Ma and myself will not likely see anything. 2018 was a very good year for us. 2019 we should qualify but the taxes are with the an accounting firm. Income while living/ working in a foreign country for part of year is in play. It's very complex. We would qualify in 2019 but I don't know if the govt will honor it when the taxes eventually get filed. Likely not until late Summer or early Fall.

got an email from SS this morning - payments for non filing recipients will start going out in May -

Supplemental Security Income Recipients, Act Now – Go to IRS.gov – A Message from Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul
Posted on April 24, 2020 by Andrew Saul, Commissioner, Social Security Administration
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients who don't file tax returns will start receiving their automatic Economic Impact Payments directly from the Treasury Department in early May. People receiving SSI benefits who did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes, and have qualifying children under age 17, however, should not wait for their automatic $1,200 individual payment. They should immediately go to the IRS's webpage and visit the Non-Filers: Enter Your Information section to provide their information. SSI recipients who have dependent children and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes need to act by Tuesday, May 5, in order to receive additional payments for their eligible children quickly.
By taking this proactive step to enter information on the IRS website about them and their qualifying children, they will also receive the $500 per dependent child payment in addition to their $1,200 individual payment. If people in this group do not provide their information to the IRS soon, their payment at this time will be $1,200 only. They would then be required to file a tax year 2020 tax return to obtain the additional $500 per eligible child.
I urge SSI recipients with qualifying children and who do not normally file taxes to take action now. Immediately go to IRS.gov so that you will receive the full amount of the Economic Impact Payments you and your family are eligible for.
Lastly, a word of caution. Be aware of scams related to the Economic Impact Payments.

We got ours the other day, our TV died the same day. [emoji46]

Are the stimulus checks tax free? If not, then we get to give half of it back.
What a deal.
It's tax free for most people, but not everyone.

If you haven't filed 2019 taxes yet and your payment was based on your 2018 adjusted gross income, you may have issues.

The cut-off point for receiving the full amount is $75K AGI ($150K for a married couple). The stimulus payment is reduced if you exceed the cut-off and totally eliminated if your 2019 AGI is over $100,000 ($200,000 for a married couple). If you earned substantially more in 2019 than you did in 2018, haven't filed yet and exceeded either of the limits, the IRS will want some or all of it back next year.

There's the separate issue of how you filed in 2019. It seems the IRS is treating the stimulus as an income tax refund. If you claimed the standard deduction ($24K for a married couple), refunds are not reported as income and are not taxed the next year. If you itemized in 2019, you have to list the refund as income for 2020 and pay tax on it.

Disclaimer: I'm not a tax attorney or a CPA and haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn for years. :)

I still haven't got mine! I am retired from the US Army(Direct Deposit), retired with Social Security(Direct Deposit), filed Taxes in 2018 and 2019 and haven't received nothing. My sister got hers 3 weeks ago via Direct Deposit and get this, my friend just got a paper check signed by Donald J. Trump this morning. The website says I am eligible and it with be deposited into account number xxxx. The page will be updated automatically to reflect when the deposit will be sent.
