I have a Mod 17 6" 1971 mfg with stock grips. I teach ladies to shoot and the grips are just too large for someone with small hands to handle. Any suggestions as to a smaller profile set of grips for a K Frame square butt?

A set of Magnas would be perfect. Most 17s come with them and not the targets.

I bought a set of new production Herrets from Roberson trading post on eBay. Similar to a factory target grip, but it feels a bit slimmer.

For that application I would just put Hogue grips on the K22. Nothing slick or anything to complain about.

I think Magnas with a t grip adapter would work well. My wife is 4’11” and they work for her.
I have a set of Hogue stocks on a 617 but even they were a little too big for her
On my M17 I found a set of Ahrends in my grip box and with a little work and True-Oil made these for it and my wife likes them and shoots the M17 pretty well. They are very narrow and somewhat contoured, I guess they are now Goldilocks stocks.

It may have already been mentioned, but S&W Combat grips (and pretty much anybody else's similar design) may very well prove to be "the hot set-up"!

I'm sure there are legions who think S&W's Targets are the neatest thing since sliced bread, but I'm one of a goodly number who think they're "clunky"---a somewhat derogatory term translating to just right in some places---and way the hell too big in others!

Then too there are aftermarket folks (Herrett's comes to mind pretty much immediately.) who make up your choice of style to fit YOUR hand----precisely!! Way back when I was a "shooter", and Herrett's was pretty much the only game in town, they were my go-to for grips. Those grips get the credit for VAST improvements in my scores---especially in timed and rapid fire!

I am a big fan of Herrett's grips. I found that target sets that cover the backstrap are a much improved feel and it shows while I shoot with them.

Magnas with a grip adapter do not help me at all and make my pinky finger want to ride under the butt of the magna.

Had to make sure it wasn't April 1st.
A member since 2009 with over 1800 posts that doesn't know there are smaller K stocks than targets.....SMH....there's something fishy.

I would go with these. Much smaller diameter.

Magna's Like these

I hate to sound pedantic, but this is the answer to your question. Everything else is overkill during your basic training for young ladies. They can then get to try some other, more "exotic" grips once they are familiar with the gun itself.

Thank you. My first thought was a pair of inexpensive aftermarket rubber set qs they will be off after each lessoon. I will find a set of magna's.

Back when I had my training company going strong, I often used a Model 19-3 4" with .38 Special target ammo to teach ladies to shoot revolvers. I simply put a pair of Magna stocks on it. The vast majority of my female students found it satisfactory. After I retired, it got GA targets back on it and it still lives in my safe in that original configuration.

K square is kind of big for women, period. Don't even ask about grips. Magnas are a bit fat, and the frame is still SB.

Service grips have a chance, particularly with a Tyler, but the real answer is a J frame. There are a lot of different grips for a J frame, and some of them even fit men.

The Herrett Shooting Star is a checkered wood grip that is ambidextrous, so it works for righties or lefties and it's a small enough target grip that it can accomodate most of the gals. I don't have one in a photo to show you but hopefully if a forum member has one he can post a picture for us.

Proper fitting grips are a big (huge)factor in precise shooting.

I generally bring a few k22's doing the same as what you are in training.
I'll have someone say I shoot really well with this gun.
I'll switch the grips to another gun they didn't shoot as well with and there amazed that now they can shoot it well also.
