Had a nearly new S&W 340 PD stolen from my truck along with a laptop and other stuff last week in San Antonio. Anybody know if I need to send a letter to ATF? I have the local law enforcement on it.

Sorry to hear of your trouble. No need to notify BATF, your local LEO's can handle it and it should be entered into the National Crime Information Center as stolen. I hope all is found and returned!

I would let the state registering folks know directly. ( IE. the org that you register your guns with at purchase.) Our state has you send in a form reporting the gun as stolen. At least that way it's out of your name if used in a crime.

I too am sorry to hear about your loss. As a LEO in Texas, I have worked several cases where guns were stolen from vehicles. Sad to say, they are rarely recovered. I am currently working on a case in which a local LEO left a 40 cal pistol in his vehicle and had it stolen. Leaving guns in vehicles is generally a bad idea in my experience.

Bad Idea

Agreed, do not leave guns in the car, but what do you do when the rules do not permit you to carry your gun in certain places? Bad rule, huh? Sorry to hear of your loss, hope the perp is apprehended and strung up.

Sorry to read of your theft. How and where did it occur?

Happened at the parking lot of a restaruant at Hwy 281 and Loop 1604 in San Antonio...Sept 25. I never leave a gun in my vehicle, always have it on me...this day for some reason I left it in my briefcase, parked at the front door of the place and went in for lunch...Came out 35 minutes later and found my suburban had been hit...The police seemed like this is just a regular occurance around there...Nothing is safe anywhere. I do have some friends in another law enforcement group there and have hopes of catching these dudes...I don't live in San Antonio.

First I'm really sorry this happened to you, and the same thing happened to my nephew in SA. I sold him my Colt Mustang Pocket-lite like a fool, and his truck got hit at a restaurant on 410 with the gun in the glove box. The funny thing is he had receipts from his store under the seat of a few thousand dollars, and they never saw it. This tells me they were after guns. I have stopped leaving guns in my vehicle for this reason, and I would hate to loose my 340PD. I just hope you had it loaded with 158gr full house loads so when they pull the trigger they will feel the wrath.
