Strange cylinder release lever in Model 27

This is S prefix Model 27. Is the cylinder release lever and the elevation screw correct? Both look different to those I have seen.

Neither are stock. Both would be easy to replace.

The rear sight looks to be an after market Millet sight, that double slot elevation screw was their style.

The older style factory rear sight assemblies are becoming difficult to find these days.

Are the rear sights and the thumb piece from early model 17 the same as in early model 27?

The rear sight is definitely a Millet rear sight, it's a quality rear sight and an upgrade from the S&W adjustable sight. The thumb piece is also aftermarket, looks to be designed for rapid cylinder release for faster reloads. Neither are factory items.

The grips would be football relieved Diamond Targets to more accurately describe them.

That cylinder has seen a few revolutions, quite a distinctive turn line.

The 27 rear sight would be checkered. These are getting difficult to find.

Looks to be an Ed Brown thumb latch/cylinder release that's been modified.

Cylinder stop may be fitted less than perfectly, producing the heavy drag line. Blue loss on rest of gun doesn't show heavy use. Be sure to shop for the current dash variant rear sight body if you decide to replace the Millett. You'll need to find a correct height sight blade while you are looking; those are replaceable. Also the 27 is the only S&W with a checkered sight body top in case you missed the previous poster.

Im not an appropriate grip kinda guy, but did the early football relief cuts have a smaller footprint that the later grips? Mike

AT least 1.5 times that much. You can't find a 28 with that kind of wear and minor mods for $700 now days, let alone a 27. A sight and a thumb piece and your in business. Might take some bucks to get a checkered 27 rear sight, Numerich has some checkered rears for about $60 but the Millet would sell for a good piece of that.
