Strange news about a snake bite.

My wife got a call from a friend in our subdivision who told her that her neighbor had gotten bit by a snake in his yard and had died. I don't know the type of snake but around here it could be a rattler, a copperhead, a water moccasin or even a coral snake. I'll try to find out more.

The nephew of the ranch owner where we hunted in Wyoming was moving wood near the main house and got bit on the finger by a rattler. He had just got out of the Air Force and didn't have health insurance.

They were an hour away from the hospital, so they phoned EMS and met them half way on the road. The paramedic has to put the paddles to him to bring him back and called for a medivac chopper. He survived, but the transport bill was $20K. He never worked the ranch again.

A friend was in Louisiana and was struck in the ankle by a copperhead. What was odd was that he only had one puncture wound from one fang. I puzzled this out in my brain till I came up with a logical cause. I finally figured it out. This happened in the deep south where half to adult men and a third of the adult females don't have a full set of front teeth. So, it would figure that their snakes don't either. My friend in essence got bit by a redneck snake.

He got off cheap as most medical bills for venomous snake bite start around $150k. One dose of anti-venom cost about $3,000 but application of that anti-venom cost another $10,000 more and most bites require multiple doses of anti-venom. BTW that same anti-venom made by same manufacturer at the same factory at same time cost about $100 in Mexico

I was bitten by a Copperhead about 20 years ago and it almost killed me. It was a while before I got to the hospital and I was in ICU for three days. The ER almost did me in by giving me too much antivenom too quickly. If it happened at my age I would be a sure goner. I am not saying that it was painful, but it hurt like hell through level III morphine.

I used to hang out with a farmer who was a Normandy vet. At the time he was in his 80s and he was great company. We were riding around his plant nursery when we spotted a grown Diamondback in the edge of the road. He had workers in the field and he didn't want the snake "disturbing" them. We stopped and while I was looking for something very long to attack the snake with, I turned around and Max was beating on the snake with a two foot long stick. Hell of a man he was.

Had one close call when I was a kid on the farm in SC. The diamondbacks were a constant worry while harvesting tobacco. Some of you guys here probably remember the tractor drawn harvesters with the picker sitting at ground level handing the leaf bundles to the stringer that sat a little higher. I hated getting stuck as the picker and liked being the tractor driver up and away from the snakes. Anyway, one day I stepped out of the tobacco barn at the same instant a rattler was passing by the door...it struck the second my foot hit the ground. My uncle witnessed it, scooped me up and ran me to the truck to take me to the hospital. He looked at my leg and I didnt have a scratch, the snake struck my baggy overall pants leg. I was one lucky kid.

I'll add to the angry Southern mob, you can't say that about Auburn folks. I have friends who spent time there, still have most of their teeth. You know they have two books in the University Library and neither's been colored in yet. (a quiet Roll Tide, still 'rebuilding')
