I thought that whole family of animals had shorter legs.

To me it appears to be a cat, Cougar size or a little smaller. The ears (under magnification) appear to be tufted too.

Might be helpful to know the location. Could rule out some animals. The tail is inordinately long and thin for a wolverine. Fox with a wet tail?

South western NY, just north of the PA border.

Our usual sightings are bear, deer, red fox, turkey, feral cats, porcupine and woodchuck. This year there has been an unusually high amount of raccoons.

I checked pictures of the suggestions above and my guess is that it's a Fisher.

Thanks for all the comments.

MickeyMouse size ears don't really fit anything I'm familiar with, but I'm not a real woodswanderer.

That tail is awfully long as well, Maybe there's something in the water around there.

but if I was forced to guess,,and I am,,I'd say a Fisher with abnormalities.

I first thought fisher but the legs look a little long. I vote for fox. They get a little bit mangy this time of year and that would explain the lack of bushy tail. Fisher tend to be very nocturnal also. It is very rare to see one out and about during the daylight.

Way too big for a Marten, which I see semi-regularly. I think it is a Fisher of which I've seen exactly one in my life. I was surprised at the length of its legs.
