A friend and I stopped at a small gun/bait/fishing supply shop out in the middle of nowhere today just to take a quick look at the dozen or so long guns they usually have. I have never seen any handguns for sale so on a whim I asked the proprietoress if they had any. She said just one revolver and that it was older .357. I asked to see it so she went to a small gun safe and pulled out a blue cardboard box at which point I lost what little will-power I have. It turned out to be a 4" 28-2 that a retired policeman had sold to them. It was made in 1973, is still in the original box and the man said he had fired less then a box of shells through it. It looks absolutely like new. She granted my request to put it on lay-away so I will be picking it up in about a month.

Selling price was $400 so I didn't even quibble, just said I would take it.

OK deal or a good deal?

Last thing I stumbled into was the low ceiling over my basement steps. I'd much rather it be a find like yours. Congrats on a great discovery and enjoy it in the new year.

Excellent deal on a great gun. I think the 28 although not fancy, is one of the most appealing guns SW made, everything you need in a N frame .357, nothing more, nothing less.

I will be sure to post pictures after I pick it up and thanks for the link to the thread. I was thinking that a set of Patrick Grasshorn's stag grips will look really cool on it too.

This is better than Christmas....

If a gun shop wants to sell guns, why don't they display their wares? I would understand if it was something that they had just recieved and had not had a chance to clean it up yet etc., but if not for that reason, I don't understand. I guess I need to ask and not suppose they are showing me everything. Great find BTW, I am looking forward to the pics.

Give ya $450! :D

Great find. I'd love to find a mate for my 6". Pretty sure I'll have to part with WAY more than $400 tho...IF I could find one.

Good price, the last one I saw in a shop was $600 and some change. It also had holster wear.

That's what you get when you leave your guns scattered around on the floor. :D

Very good story and great price. Never hurts to ask.

Re: "Why don't gun shops display their wares?"
You have to remember that some folks in the trade are not the greatest when it comes to running a business. Some are just inept. Some seem to not care if they ever make another sale or not. I doubt that there is another area where you are likely to find more "un-customer focused" merchants. Something about selling guns seems to attract grumpy, sullen, "screw you" personality types. ... Or maybe it's the quality of the people they have to put up with as customers! :D

Maybe this place has always been a bait/fishing equipment/gun shop, I don't know - I have been stopping in occasionally for only about 15 years. The place is set up rather oddly in that there are basically 3 separate rooms and one person usually handles everything. I would imagine that the handguns are kept out of sight and locked up because some kids come in with parents and you know how kids are. All over the place and into every thing and parents don't watch them real close. If the handguns were visible one might just disappear under somebody's coat while the old man is buying minnows..
