I've found plenty of reviews and suggestions for Shield but very few for the full size M&P 9 with longer barrel. This is my home defense gun along with shotgun. thx

Any quality SD ammo is fine. I'm partial to Gold Dots or HST for my M&P. They both have proven track records and you can't go wrong with either one. Whether you think you need the +P version of each one would be entirely up to you.

IMHO the Federal HST 124 grain standard velocity is the best I know of. Because the +P version is moving at a higher velocity it expands quicker and does not penetrate as well as the standard velocity version. OK - splitting hairs here and either one is excellent however I believe the standard velocity edges out the +P version. The Speer Gold Dot is also very good but IMO second fiddle to the HST. If there is something better than the 124 grain Federal HST I am unaware.

Like said above, mostly any name brand ammo will work fine. Find the one which is 100% reliable every time and stock up on it. The best bullet in the world is useless if you can't hit what you shoot at or it doesn't come out of the gun.

I'm just an old fashioned guy and still like the old Winchester Silvertip ammo but not the Remington Golden Saber offering. The newer stuff, also like above, the Speer GDHP or Federal HST ammo. I hear good things about the Sig V-Crown ammo but I have no first hand experience.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I do plan on buying and trying in my various guns as so i narrow down what I like etc. Just posted Q's about buying 50 packs online.

First, very seldom does a shotgun, not work, in most cases.
Many a time just seeing a shotgun, clears out an area.

In a pistol, many like the 115 gr which is a great "Summer" load.

I prefer a heavier, 124 gr bullet when heavy clothes or jackets, might be worn
to add a little more penetration, insurance.

Some swear by the newer heavy 147 gr SD bullets that are now on the shelf's.

I use all three, in the different 9mm pistols that start at a short 3" barrel to those with a long 5" barrel
in order to get POA and dependable ejection, that I am happy with.

Good shopping.

I recommend you look into some of the fluted bullet ammo for your nightstand firearm.

Apparently, Bill Wilson or Wilson Combat believes fluted ammo is the future, because he bought Lehigh Defense (the bullet maker) and is investing millions in an ammo plant in Texas.

I'm probably going to fire off all my JHP ammo this summer (mostly Federal 124gr HST), and replace it with fluted rounds from either Wilson Combat (Lehigh Defense) Xtreme Defense, Norma's NXD, or Underwood's Xtreme Defender Solid Monolithic Self Defense.

Wilson Combat and Underwood along with some others use the Lehigh Defense solid copper bullet, while Norma's is a molded copper projectile.

Looking for pre loaded ammo, or bullets to re-load?

For pre-loaded ammo the tried and trusted federal 124gr HST is what I carry. I also have some speer gold dot 124 grain ammo that is excellent. In my 9mm defense ammo shootout the gold dot actually had the lowest extreme spread, and was the most accurate out of my bedside Glock 19. I'd say you can't go wrong with either. Hornady Critical defense came in third in my shootout, and is another good one. I'd say buy whatever you can find/afford right now.

For my model 36 i just carry some home loads with the 158 gr Hornady XTP, which is a good one that's readily available, if you plan to load your own.

So many great options for 9mm SD rounds.

These are what I keep around.

Advice at CCW classes in Vegas was to use Speer Gold Dot. Why? It was issued to LVMPD and nullified any claims from rabid anti-gun attorneys that you were using ammo that caused "unnecessary" harm in a self defense shooting.
