Surprising penetration

Was anyone else surprised by the power that the new 22LR cartridges have, at least at short range? I have been target shooting with this gun for a year now and tried a few things recently. I shot 2x4's and some thick linoleum (??) or wood-ish floor tiles and came away rather impressed. The ammo tested was CCI Blazer, Velocitor, Stinger, Aguila Supermax HP, and Aguila SSS.

CCI Blazer rounds sailed through 3 whole 2x4s at about 10 yards and kept on going. I would have stacked more, if I expected that. The SSS penetrated 2 while going sideways and embedded in the third. Velocitor did 2.5 with good expansion. The hyper velocity hp rounds cleared 2 easy and made nasty exit wounds.

As far as the tile went...the Aguila Supermax and CCI Stinger were the winners, I guess due to it being a softer target than the 2x4, and both penetrated 5 out of 6 tiles, however the Supermax made a .38 caliber hole in number 4 and 5, one that I could stick my pinky into, and significantly bigger than the Stinger.

Next weekend I'm going to shoot some steel pots and pans and things like that. I know that for metal, the lightest and fastest bullets are best, which is why I just got some Aguila Supermax RN. I've seen enough tests on youtube to not worry about ricochets with metal of that thickness.

Does anyone have any examples of things that they have tested and surfaces penetrated? I have to say, that based on my tests, I would have no issue grabbing my 15-22 loaded with 1470fps Aguila Interceptor HPs if someone broke in, if I can't get to my 12-gauge Remington. CCI and Aguila ammo has been flawless in my gun and the only ftf's were from the garbage Golden Bullets that the manual warns against.

Also, does anyone have any experience with the Interceptor in ballistic gel? I love this vid of the Velocitor in gel, even though the 1250 fps impact velocity confused me, since it was firing out of a full-length barrel. It should have been 1300+ fps, no?

Based on chrono tests of other people, the Interceptor seems to average a solid 1400+ fps in the 16-inch barrels, which would make its gel performance even more impressive, and I would imagine the RN version would be the best possible penetrator, which I intend to test as soon as I find some for sale.

So...opinions on my rant? Lol.

Be careful shooting steel at close range.
I shoot pots and pans as well and sometimes you can get a crazy ricochet.
Therefore I shoot them at a distance.

Lol, yeah anyone with a 22 rifle can get some Blazers and SuperMaxes and replicate those results I'm sure. I'm waiting on some solid nose hyper velocity Interceptors so I can see if they clear 4 boards.

Haven't tried the wood test, but shot a possum in the front yard last night (annoying the dogs to know end). CCI Blazer from 8 yards literally took the entire top of his head off, from just above the upper jawline. Didn't expect that, but quick kill.

i did the same testing with various ammo.

aquila sss 60g = penetrated into the 2nd 2x4

cci segmented hp sub sonic 1050fps 40g = penetrated into the 2nd 2x4

cci 36g hp 1200fps = lightly penetrated into the 3rd 2x4

winchester m22 40g 1200fps = penetrated into the 3rd 2x4

cci velcitor 40g hp 1435fps = penetrated into the 2nd 2x4

aquila interceptor 40g hp 1500fps = penetrated into the 2nd 2x4

at first i was surprised at the results because the 36g slower cci hp penetrated more than the faster 40g hollow points. it may be that the larger the grain the more gun powder needed for the same penetration or if the barrel's twist rate favors 36g over the 40g.

of course this was not scientific because the 2x4's were not secured, just slightly evenly spaced out. they were knocked on their back when the bullets penetrated. there might be more penetration if they were secured firmly due to bullet trajectory altering.

next time i attempt this i will do 10 bullets per type and secure the 2x4's.

based on my results i would load the 40g aquila interceptor solid point bullets. they should penetrate into the 4th 2x4 or greater. i could not find this bullets, though.

The only place they pop up every now and then is gunbroker.com...for crazy prices. You will definitely get more penetration if the boards don't move back and absorb some of the impact. It makes a big difference.

well that must be it then. the boards do get pushed back and get knocked over. i will do the test again some day and do it right this time.

One reason the Aguila SSS 60g tumpled is because it requires a 1:9 twist barrel to stabilize it properly not a standard 1:16 twist .22LR barrel. I can't address whether it will function properly but it shoots much more accurately when using a CMMG conversion kit in a 1:9 twist AR barrel. Some companies who make 10/22 barrels will make a barrel in 1:9 specifically to shoot this ammo.

It didn't tumble out of the muzzle at ten yards. The entrance hole did not show signs of a keyhole. The exit on the first board did, though.
