Survived NYNY

How can anyone afford to live there? My ex and I were there back in 1984. I remember driveing all over looking for a room and the cheapest rat hole was about 4X as much as I paid anywhere else on the trip. First place the desk man said I got nothing right now, ya want ta wait maybe twenty minuets I should have one! Finaly dead tired we got a flea bag and found "fresh evidence" in the bed!
My impression was bad. The freeway looked like the iraq`s had just left kuwait. Many cars stripped alongside the freeway. One place on the freeway a building was over the freeway. As we drove under it I had my elbow out the window and somebody spit on it. Bums and old bag women everywhere. I did drive right by mayor Kock giveing a speech on the street. My impression was people paid as much to live in a rat nest as others would pay to live in a mansion elsewhere. No thanks.

Been there many many times. I live 1.5 hours away in Pa. Like it just wouldn't want to drive there.

I can never just sit in my state or county just because i couldnt carry a gun. I made it to 21 without needing a gun Im sure ill be fine a few days or a week without one. Besides i havent finished my Euro drive yet. Been from France to Sweden in a rental!

I went there in the 70's on business. I went for a walk and a young lady came up to me and asked if I was looking for a date. I told her no, I am looking for a newspaper. She huffed off.

I would never go there today. If I can't carry there, they do not need my money. I have also canceled all credit cards owned by NY banks. I believe in spending my money where my values are respected.

Used to hang in the city during the late 60's. Fillmore East, Electric Circus, Washington Square the Wonder Bar. The coffee houses were a zoo in humanity. Definitely a TRIP.:):)

My daughter lives on the Upper East Side. I've gotten to the point that I can get in and out without too much trouble now. She'll be moving to a different apt. in Oct., so dad has to move her again. You haven't lived until you dragged a dual axle u-haul trailer through Manhattan. Back in the 70's I used to play a bar in Greenwich Village. The city definitely seems cleaner/friendlier now but I'll admit I haven't been back to the Village.

Glad you enjoyed the trip...think about going back in the spring or fall. You could plan several trips and still have lots to see/do.

Great trip report, thanks for posting it. I worked downtown for 18 years, commuting from Long Island, so I have my war stories and badges of honor.
Favorite T-Shirt I ever saw in a shop window:
WELCOME TO NY! now go home

That would be the Cross Bronx Exy. ( North of the GW Bridge) Not really any stripped cars anymore, but whole place ( NYC) is a dump.

Post number 27-------- He was in the village/soho.
Between Hudson ( I think) and 6th. The apt next to his just rented July 1! ( Number 2)
The rent is like 3000 a month. Nice huh? To live in a sewer.

I wouldn't live there for free. Won't even go in that cesspool anymore.

Like the other post said....
Rather be in Helena Montana!

Back 40 years ago I had a bad burger in Billyjoebob USA, the burgers must still be awful. There's plenty of worse cities than NYC in every state in this country, I've been in a few.

New York City is a great place to visit, love the Deli's.
Just never go to Yankee Stadium wearing a Red Sox hat and tee shirt.;)
