Did they make a SW 1955 pre-model 25 45acp with a 4" barrel. I can't find anything with a 4" barrel. The one listed with a photo says 4" barrel and it has a red insert. My book says they made a few with 5" barrel.

SCSW only lists a 6.5" for a model of 1955. Later model marked guns came with 4" and 5" barrels.

That's only according to the book, I'd be curious if such an animal existed.

I looked in my SCSW and the Blue Book and can't find a 4". It sounds nice, but I don't think it is original. It looks nice in the photo, I checked a couple of times to see if it was a 5" but it doesn't look that long. It still interests me, I'm looking for a 1955 birthday gun. I have the 25-2 and 25-5.

From my memory back in the day, the .45 ACP Model 25 was not catalogued in four inch, only in 6 1/2. When the 25-5 came out, it was initially only in four inch, with the longer barrels being introduced much later.
That does not mean there were none, as perhaps some were special ordered and factory made. So, back the the late 60s, early 70s, you could not find a 4 inch 25-2 or a 6 inch 25-5.
And it would not be "rare" that my memory is faulty either!!

I thought very few were made with a 4" barrel and the 5" are very hard to find but exist.

Found a 25-2 with a lot of finish wear and made it into a 3 1/2". Andy Horvath cut the barrel and Viktors Legacy in Fairport Harbor Ohio did the bluing. Larry

I suppose Pinto works in this case also.

I also have a pre 25 model of 1955 unfortunately I modified it to 45 colt by fitting a reamed 44 mag cylinder long before I knew anything about what the value of original condition one would be worth now. Live life and learn. It is still a great gun though!

When did S&W completely quit doing special orders?

1955 45 Target with a 4-inch barrel built for Remington Arms by S&W from a 1950 45 Target shipped to them years earlier. A great shooter with a W-main spring.

'My name is Doc44, I don't always buy .45s but when I do... I prefer the most awesome ever made by S&W.'

Kudos Bill on another wonderful .45, I forgot you had. Thanks for sharing.

I don't think a day goes by that am not utterly amazed by the Smiths you have in your collection! Another gorgeous revolver!

Thanks for all the info. I figured that it wasn't original and never made a contact. Your information just confirmed what I thought.

"Oh my...……………" as best said by Mr. Sulu.

This one needs a new thread or a link to an existing one...…...with many many pics.
