I had a flu shot last fall and yet I think I came down with it anyway. I had heard that a lot of those shots were duds and I may have gotten one.

Got a chest cold, and Friday nite through Saturday afternoon I had all I could do to get up and go to the bathroom. I did walk the dogs for an hour late SAturday and today. I really feel drained now.

I had the shot and the flu, too. When I got my vaccine the doctor told me the shot was only 15% effective.

Got ‘em for years and years to good effect. Then got sick three years in a row right after getting the shot...

Decided to drop the shot.

I think the trick is to stay away from people insofar as possible in flu season. Wash with soap frequently. Wear a mask in crowds.

(Wait a minute! Didn't we have this conversation again already this season? Dang deja vu all over again!)

Had the flu shot in November, went home, woke up the next morning with an outbreak of shingles (starting at the injection site of the flu shot, spreading over my shoulder onto my chest, down around my waist and nearly to my rectum). Can't say the two events were related medically, but they will remain connected in my mind forever.

I'd trust medical advice from the folks who frequent this forum over what I've seen and heard at a lot of hospitals and Dr.'s offices.

Take care of yourself. The flu is rough stuff.

Thanks. I say/write things tongue-in-cheek just to lighten up. I got a handle on it best I can with diet and some supplements. Not much can be done about a virus.

You were probably infected with the flu BEFORE you got the shot. The shot is to prevent you from getting it.

I've taken the flu shot for years and have never had the real flu. But now that my heart as well as my lungs are seriously compromised (at age 80) I'm under doctor's orders to stay home and avoid groups of people as much as possible. The doc, a Russian lady I like and trust, is a no-Bravo-Sierra type. She said simply that the flu "would be a death sentence." I listen when she talks.

I've had the shingles and pneumonia vaccines. Somehow despite stage 3 COPD and pulmonary fibrosis I've never had pneumonia, and I aim to keep it that way. I have had shingles on my face and head, and don't ever want that again.

As for medical advice and legal counseling, I don't look for that here. That's not what I'm here to get.

When the THIRD leading cause of U. S.deaths per year are "doctor error" I'm not certain where we should go for medical advice.

I know I have become quite cynical about lots of our once held opinions.
Like that doctors are to be held as though on an ivory pedestal; but my real feelings keep creeping through.
Frankly, I sometimes think a new Mercedes,a summer place, and other tangibles sway their diagnosis.

mistakes...

The old statistic was that there were 1.5 million mistakes a year that resulted in 90,000 deaths.

???????????? I would like to see the the "stats" that show doctor error as the third leading cause of death!!! If that is "true" then we are all in trouble, with the cost of land, Mercedes, and other tangibles going up, Doctor error may be Number 1 soon!!! We should license and register them, oh that's right they already are?? Be Safe,

Well, it was reported over 4 years ago. Not sure what updated data shows.

About this time last year, I came down with bacterial pneumonia (needed a trip to the ER). Took me a few months to get over it. I was about to go get my annual flu shot in October, then I came down with the flu (A&B virus). The flu was nothing compared to having pneumonia. A couple of months later, I got my flu, pneumonia, and shingles shot all in one sitting. Maybe I'll get lucky this year.
