I purchased a used SW40GVE several years ago. I have only recently started shooting it at the range and I seem to be shooting low. The only thing that looks off to me is the guide rod has some wear at the front end. I just noticed a little slack in the slide at the rear.
Thoughts, anyone?

There are numerous threads on this subject. 99% it is not the gun, but shooter technique. I see this frequently with shooters new to the plastic fantastic. One shooter was shooting a foot low at five yards. I had them hold the gun while I operated the trigger and it hit dead center.

So what am I doing that's making me shoot low? I use the same technique is use with my Browning Practical 9mm.

Not knowing your grip or trigger control and not being able to watch you, I couldn't say. This chart may provide some information for you, but it does not address grip problems. In general, light single-action triggers mask problems that striker-fired triggers exacerbate.
The basic problem is moving the gun just before the shot breaks.

When I first got my SW9VE, I was shooting very low and to the left. Our CCW instructor shot it and split a playing card with the first shot.
Turns out it was me and the famous Sigma trigger. :D
I really had to concentrate for a while, grip, how much finger in the trigger, press the trigger straight back, all that, and pretty soon, I wasn't shooting so low.
I don't know if that's the problem you are having, but don't give up on a good gun just yet.

I sometimes practice at 25 yds which accentuates any errors. I find that I also shoot left-low. Thanks to OKFCO5 for the chart. It gives me something to check next time I'm at the range.

I will work on my technique. Low and left did seem where I was hitting. Thanks for the input

mwwatson - Your very first post mentioned two mechanical defects in your gun. A problem with the guide rod and some looseness of the slide. Both of these affect the position of the barrel when it is ready to fire. Have you had these corrected?

I've replaced the recoil assembly with a stainless rod and heavier spring. The slack in the slide I'm not sure what to do about that. I haven't been to the range since replacing the recoil assembly. So I haven't been able to evaluate my technique or the new recoil assembly.
