SWS Brass Deflector Gen 2

Redneck- could you provide a link to the UTG riser mount and some instructions on how to attach everything together? Instructions need to be at a "how to attach this for dummies" level since I am not experienced whatsoever and have only shot my 15-22 once. I am ordering the deflector and this sounds like an excellent idea.

My suggestion to you would be to shoot the snot out of your gun before changing anything. This allows you to get a feel for how YOUR gun acts, as they all don't act the same. Then you have a baseline to determine how certain additions impact your gun.

This is exactly what new shooters should do before changing out parts. Changing out multiple parts at once may impact how the firearm works. It can be a part out of spec or incorrect install or they just do not work together.

Took my version 2 to the range today. Worked perfectly for the 100 rounds I shot. Thanks for the replacement. It looks great on the gun.

You have to look hard, especially in the rather low light of my indoor range, but you can visually check that there is not a round in the breech. It is a little difficult, but worth it to not have hot brass hitting my arm.

So I installed this new version & loved the look of it, however as I feared, it blocked too much of my view of the chamber. I'm not saying this is not a great product for others... just not for me due to the way I do a safety check.

So I gave it some thought, and decided to mount it to a UTG low profile riser mount that I had sitting around. My logic being, if I used the deflector, it would be nice to be able to remove it without tools. So I put it on, and yes it comes off much easier but the really cool thing is that the riser pushes the deflector out enough that I once again can easily see in the chamber.

Thought it might cause some issues, so I took it out to my range & shot a couple of hundred rounds thru the gun. I had no failures whatsoever & the back of my Gator was littered with brass that fell straight down. I was very pleased. A couple of rounds escaped over the top, in the gap I created, but those likewise fell straight down. The vast majority just deflected as advertised.

I am keeping this on my gun now. I love not throwing brass out into my pastures & feel much safer following my normal safety procedures of checking the chamber quickly.

Made it to the range this morning with the new brass deflector. Fired 150 rounds and had 13 bounce back into the chamber using Winchester M-22 ammunition. I will try to get back there in a few days and test with other ammunition.

I will also install the 45 degree prototype (without the slots) that worked really well for me. It that one is better, I may just paint it black.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, I love the concept, the product, and how SWS has taken care of things through all of this. I was the first person to post about bounce back problems, and feel this whole thing is kind of my fault. I think my rifle just has a strange ejection pattern!

That is an excellent mod!

For what it is worth, I think your great product would be even better if mounted on a QD lever mount, such as what I pictured above. As we all know, the 22 has a tendency to jam every so often & having something hard mounted that blocks the chamber could be troublesome, if you didn't bring your tools.

If yours was designed to mount to a QD low riser, and mount flush as it does now, would be great. Same reliability as now but with a QD. Then you could offer the medium & high risers for those that wish to see the chamber better.

But for me, mounting your product on a low riser is perfect, but not so for someone who wants the tight fit.

I went through 150 rounds of Winchester M-22. Maybe the problem is with the lot production. Ordered it from Cabelas as I'm sure a lot of people here did. I will also check the other boxes of M-22 I have and see if they are the same lot number. At least none of mine were on the recall list.

I will also try several different types of ammunition before going back to the 45 degree prototype.

Thanks for the concern! I still think my rifle has a weird ejection pattern, which is why I had more problems than everyone else.

I should clarify what I meant my shooting only once. I've only gone to the range once to shoot my rifle. Shot about 300 rounds through it with some FTE and FTF. Winchester bulk pack so I expected some FTF as the bulk pack Winchesters tend to be really loose and they can be twisted very easily. I've also heard there tends to be "duds" in bulk packs. It could have also been the way I loaded the mags since I had to load the mags quite hurriedly.

Bump for a great product, with terrific customer service. My daughter no longer gets clobbered in the eye with casings (she likes to shoot prone) and so both of us are happy.

She has no issues checking for clear (nor I, double checking her) and we've experienced no problems whatsoever (either with bounce back or anything else). FYI, she is not using a riser, either.

Tried 10 rounds of each with both deflectors (100 rounds with each).
New deflector - 7 bounce backs
45 degree prototype - 1 bounce back

Both deflectors shared a bounce back with the Aguila SuperMaximum, which is advertised at 1750 fps. Left the 45 degree prototype deflector attached and fired another 120 rounds of Winchester M-22 with no additional failures.

For everyone else here, I firmly believe that the ejection pattern for shell casings can vary between rifles, and that mine is kind of a problem child. My rifle likes the 45 degree prototype the best. SWS has done an amazing job at creating a great product, and went above and beyond to make the original design better! I have been contacted personally several times and was always treated well. I'm really thinking about the new charging handle latch SWS offers.

Even though the new design doesn't work as well on MY rifle as the prototype, several people have asked about it, and I highly recommended the deflector to all of them (I hope they all order one!).

Kind of off topic... The prototype deflector is not anodized or painted. Thinking about some Flat Dark Earth furniture from Magpul and would like to paint the deflector. Does anyone know what colour would match?

Hope the 45° prototype continues to work out for you. I would look into Krylon or Duracoat, I think they make some tans that are very close to the Magpul FDE.

RedNeck Jim is using a Leaper QD riser and just attaching the brass deflector to it. That will be the best solutions for those that want/need it.

Simple Weapon Solutions M&P 15-22 Brass Deflector Gen 2 is now available.

The 15-22 ejects the brass straight out to the right. If you are a left handed shooter, like me, the brass often ejects into your right arm. With the brass deflector most of the brass will drop straight down into a nice pile.

The brass deflector can also be useful to right handed shooters as it will keep the brass from bouncing off lane dividers and landing back onto you, or hitting shooters in the lanes next to you.

The Brass Deflector is designed to work with most optics that are mounted to the top rail above the ejection port. However with the wide variety of optics and mounts that are available, the Brass Deflector may not work with your setup.

It is highly recommended that you use medium strength thread locker, such as 242 Blue Loctite. Only a small amount is needed to keep the screws from backing out during firing. Do not over tighten the nylon tip set screw, as you can cause damage to your rail. Run the screw down until it touches the rail and then tighten 1/8 - 1/4 turn.

This brass deflector is designed to work only with the Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 and will not work with .223 / 5.56 AR15 rifles.

I was one of the proto-testers and got one for free so you can thank SWS if you want it. It's a great product, but I did a handguard conversion on my 15-22 and the deflector has no place to mount to my rifle.






Put me down as one of the testers for a top rail mounted brass deflector that would work on pretty much every handguard.
