Tacticool22 offers the 15-22 handguard converter nut in standard and modified versions.

The description for the modified version:

This item requires permanant modification of your upper. The bottom hand guard alignment tab needs to be removed and the top hand guard alignment tab needs to be almost completely removed.

The back of the free float hand guard or delta ring barrel nut will almost touch the bottom portion and be .1 or 2.5mm away from the top part.

Can someone explain the difference in simple terms, and under what circumstances one would want the modified converter nut? I've never changed the handguard on a 15-22 or on an AR.

Got it, thanks. So the difference is a free float rail won't mount flush unless I trim the tabs on the upper receiver and use Tacticool22's modified converter nut.

How big is the gap using the standard converter nut? 1/8" or so?

The gap at the top is 1/4" and the gap at the bottom is 9/64"
You would want the modified nut if your hand guard has an anti-rotation tab or if you simply want as small a gap as possible.
The first pic shows a MAGPUL 2 piece hand guard on a standard AR barrel nut. The back of the free float hand guard goes just as far back as the AR barrel nut because the depth of the threaded bore is the same for everything that screws on the upper.

Ordered the modified one this weekend, hope to get it soon. :D I get my rail on Tuesday.

Going to be putting on the MI Gen 2 T-Series 12" rail in FDE. Hopefully there will not be much of a gap.

With the modified version, there should be no gap, if I'm understanding this correctly.

There will still be a gap. If you look at this pic (very similar to the pic in my last post) the red line shows you where the hand guard or barrel nut will wind up. The upper part of the upper is offset back and that gap can not be accounted for on the rifle.
The hand guard looks like it has the picatinny rail sticking out past the back of the barrel nut, so the gap might go away because of that. I hope that part is not too long or you will have to trim it down.

I already have the standard nut, hehe, and am getting the converted nut this week. I will post pics of the handguard installed on both nuts to compare the differences. Ah man this is comical.
I'm curious to see how the gaps are with the different nuts and a free float handguard as opposed to the delta ring/two-piece handguard assembly that tacticool22 posted.

The gap will be the same, no matter what you put on. The length of the threads is exactly the depth of the threaded bore in a Mil Spec AR-15 barrel nut and all free float hand guards and custom barrel nuts have that same thread depth.
The standard nut will come up to the front of the indexing tabs.
The modified nut will go up to the face of the bottom of the upper.

I think a side by side pic of the pieces will answer a lot of these questions.

Well I received my MI Gen 2 T-Series 12" rail today and went ahead and installed it on the standard nut.

There is a 3/16” gap between the upper and the top section of the MI rail. This is not due to the rail hitting any of the tabs. The rail nut is threaded all the way down leaving the gap with Tacticool 22’s standard nut (which he clearly states on his website).

Seen here:

I should be receiving the modified nut either tomorrow or Thursday and will post pics then.

More to come.

Can't wait to see it with the modified nut Triggs75 it's gonna be a great finish to your rifle with that hand guard and the minimal gap.
I might have to "borrow" your pics.

Thanks, yeah I am anxious to see the modified one as well. I believe it will make me very happy. :D And by all means you are more then welcome to "borrow" my pics if you like the outcome of them.

So I received the modified nut today in the mail and shaved off the tabs on the upper. I just used a dremel and it took about 2 minutes at most to shave the tabs off. I figure if I ever want to go back to stock I could just order the blank upper from S&W for I believe around $20.

So here is the first pic with the standard nut that is posted above with the MI Gen 2 T-Series 12" rail. Remember this left a 3/16” gap between the upper and the top section of the MI rail.

Here is the modified nut with the MI Gen 2 T-Series 12" rail. This left only a 3/32” gap, cuts the gap in half.

Here is a picture of the modified nut on the barrel. As you can see how much further it , you can see the barrel threads coming out the front. I removed the lower tab completely and left just a tab on the upper tab since there is no reason to cut it all the way off. I cleaned up the upper after the pics.

Just to ramble on, I remembered I have a Samsonite rail sitting in my closet that attaches differently to the upper so I might as well try it as well.

Here is a pic with the STANDARD nut on and the Samsonite rail. As you can see this combination actually leaves the least amount of gap compared to the MI rail. The modified rail might not even work with this kind of set up since it is not the upper that is blocking it from a perfect fit.

So look at the style of handguard you are interested in putting on then choose the proper nut from tacticool22.

Hope that helps guys,

I also wanted to say thanks to Tacticool22. I modified my Mod 1 barrel nut to work and then purchased the Mod 2. The Mod 2 gave me considerably more threads to secure my AR barrel nut.

I love to support small companies with great CS and innovation. Good job Sir.
