I'll be taking my CHL class this weekend, along with my Bride and the wives of two friends. The instructor said there are about ten women in the class. That helped convince my Bride to come along.
We have recent changes in Texas. Some started September 1, 2013. Some effective Jan. 1.
Classroom hours have been cut to 4-6 rather than 10-15 in the past. Shooting proficiency is NOT part of the class, though, as I understand it, you must demonstrate competency in the handling and shooting of the firearm. Not sure if there is still any sort of target scoring. Everyone is asked to bring 50 rounds with them.
No restriction on permit re: Semi-Auto or Revolver. You can qualify with either and carry either. Doesn't matter.

I have found the study materials on-line, as well as a copy of the test so we can prepare ahead of time, though everything is well covered in the class. You should be able to walk in cold and still do fine on the test.

Cost of our class is $85. That includes coffee and donuts in the morning and lunch. The instructor's wife is known for her side business of gourmet catering so lunch should be good!

Time: 0800 to about 1500 including lunch break. Law requires a minimum of four hours class time, not including range time.

Texas Fee is $140 for four years. (Veterans now get a break on the fees.) Renewal is $70 for five years. Fingerprint fees: $10.00. Renewal app can be made on-line. No further classroom time required for renewal.

Social Security Numbers are no longer required for application.

One other interesting change in the law. The wording has been changed to show a violation for "Intentional display of handgun." Apparently, this may mean that if you bend down at the grocery store to get something off the bottom shelf and your gun butt is exposed it will NOT be a violation as it was not intentional. Don't know how a 'printing' against a tight shirt would be interpreted but that doesn't sound like an intentional display. Open carry remains prohibited.

Overall, some good changes in Texas law. Looking forward to getting my permit, though I understand it may take up to two months to get it after the class and application is made.

Today, I'm going to take my Bride out into our woods and do some practice shooting.

Welcome to the fold. I think every person that is eligible to CC, should. Practice--practice--practice

Enjoy your CCL course. Give us a report next week and let us know how it went.:)

What part of TX are you in? Is the Instructor affiliated with a store, or does he teach independently?
I'll be renewing next year.
One of the things that's neat is the Sr discount and Honorably Discharged discount Texas offers. $35 renewal for Srs and $25 renewal for HD Vets. (If I read it right).
Other changes... No need to redo prints, unless your old/original set are now deemed unsat and no need for new Photo, as they will use your DL Photo on file.

Rob, we live near Bellville. Our guy is an independent instructor.
