Tale of a 581 restoration/customization

That's sweeeeet!
I was going to do the same thing with my 681, but ended up selling it first. Didn't regret it until this very moment.

DHart, if you're around, I finally sent my 681 up to Mark today. :o
Only took a few years. :D
I'd love to find a finished challenged 581 and do the same.

That's fantastic, ladder. Mark is the man when it comes to precision revolvers. What does the project entail?

Please let's see it when it's done!

Good to see you around.

Chopping it to 3 inches, round butt, fitting a 7 shot cylinder, milling the front sight for a brass or gold beat.
Action job.

Maybe slab siding the barrel and installing a crane ball lock? Bead blast or just polish?

I have time to think of what else.

Hey friends... after several years of stepping away from my firearms passion, I'm beginning to re-engage. WOW... I can't believe the likes for this pistol. I do understand how cool it is, though. Of many S&W revolvers, this one is my favorite. They've all been safe queens for years now, though. I'm "fixin'" to warm up a few of these S&W revs and my 1911 "heaters" in the coming weeks. It's been too long. Best wishes to you all! Don (aka DHart)

Hello Don - Great to see you on the forum - I think you taught many of us old timers how to take pictures as well as gave tips and tricks for detailing stainless guns with scuff pads. Glad to see you back. And I'm still in love with L frames - have a 581 nickel be here next week. :)

Hi doublesharp! Nice to see you again, too. Thanks for the "hello". I'm certainly glad if anything I've learned and shared can benefit others, too.

That nickel 581 sounds fantastic. "Ls" (pre-locks in particular) are just great guns.

Glad to have you back Don. Always good to see the old timers come back.

I did send a 681 off to Mark, and he did a great job. Sorry for the poor pics, maybe you can teach me some lessons. :D

I've looked for a finish challenged 581 for the same treatment to no avail.

681 back from Pinnacle

Heh, after looking I did see this, and made some comment about not modifying a gun.

After looking again, you have a nice 681 .

But that 581 is really something special.

PS If I showed you how to post pics they'd probably end up sideways LOL

DHart.... been awhile . Glad to have you back
I had a factory 3" 586 back in the 90s..... great to look at .... but when grabbin a gun to go.... it was always a 3" K-frame for CC or a 4" round butted 686 for woods carry. While I have and like Aherns that gun would look even better with a set of Spegel checkered Boot Grips!

My 3" 586 ended up getting traded for a 1990s Performance Center Shorty-9.... wish I'd kept it ................

Your gun is like a piece of "hard rock candy just [perfect] for looking at!"

:)
