Target Chiefs Special

I really appreciate. I will comply. MORE IMPORTANTLY. Want entire forum and administration. to know i don't want to lose membership for misstatement. In one post I said "never posted before" Fumbling around I find I did a few posts 10 + years ago. I am very old and memory shows it. Trying to notify administration. unable so far. Consider this official notification. Thanks bb

You are good sir, no harm no foul! We are all about back and forth education. I have learned so much from other Forum members and hopefully a tiny fraction of what I've posted over the years has helped others.

Your revolver sounds really interesting and will be fun to see it when you get the hang of picture posting. Please stick around and enjoy.

The gun on the bottom of this picture is a mod 36 Target(CST). Note the front sight height, which is needed for the adjustable rear sight!

The CSTs were made in limited number blocks of serial numbers starting in Mar 1955. There were never any serial numbers with less than 5 digits! Some collectors consider the model 60s with adjustable rear sights to be CSTs and some of these variations were made in present times. There have been "fakes" made almost from the start of these guns because they have always commanded a premium price in the market. Good luck with the pictures as they will help with the answers to your questions!

Imagine an old Chiefs

first attempt at pics. Until then, easy to imagine just a very early Chiefs (1955) ? with bobbed hammer and sourdough type sight inserted into a cutout half-moon original blade. Still a 4 digit SN thruout 3 usual places.

Yep the front sight is almost always the giveaway that it's a fake target Chiefs; that tall 'shark fin' is hard to replicate and install. Or just not wanted.

I'm glad the factory finally added a front sight base beginning with the model 36-6 CST 3".

That helps a lot: it's the earliest variation of the Baby Chiefs Special from 1951. The 1/2 round modified front sight is the dead giveaway it's an aftermarket target sight installation. You can see in the photo above what the front sight on a factory target model should look like.

None of these Baby J frames were made as target models by the factory.

It should have serial #s in the usual 6 locations for that vintage gun.

As you stated it is much better looking than the "shark fin" front sight

Hey, Even though both of my 3" CSTs have sight bases, I LIKE the Shark Fin . . . even on my small bore

Butcherd baby

I do photos by email a lot. If some member sends me an email and i return with photos perhaps they can get it onto the forum for me. I know. This sounds like a Nigerian scam !

This one would not letter. Assuming a 36-1 was "turned into" a Target. I tried the SWCA SWHF and 1971 guns are not in the conversion yet. Who ever did it, either the custon shop or some good gunsmith, it was very well done.

But we can't forget the best og the 3" 36 Targets, The 36-6.

At least your gun will function correctly! My first CST(many years ago), a 36-1, is a fake also but the producer did not change the front sight! When I bought the gun Mr. Jinks could not provide a factory letter because the records, at that time, were in storage and inaccessible! I have never fired the gun because I am afraid it will shoot the next county over! I still own the gun and count it as part of the cost of my S&W education!
