I have a 586 that has the smooth combat trigger, which is fine, but I really love the tactile experience when using the .500 target trigger. I feel like I have more leverage and ability to control shot placement when using them, too...

So for a clean, used trigger only, what is a good price point to look for? New is not needed at all.

I've seen the .500 target triggers and hammers sell for anywhere from $40 to $90 each over the last few months.

Ditto. I would guess than an average price might be $70. I've bought several sets over the last few years and about $125 for the pair sounds right.

Strictly a guess but I'm saying $40-$50 should get you one.
You may find used ones cheaper.
What width is your smooth trigger?

My smooth is the narrow standard width. I will have to get a number when I get home.

I shot it today and it is very good in single and has a stiff double

I think the official width for his 586’s smooth trigger is .312”.

I hate ½” target triggers so I’m not fresh on their prices. (To each their own.) Remember they were reduced to .400” approximately 1980 so I would expect a premium for .500”. phtmax might be satisfied with a less expensive .400” serrated trigger.

Triggers usually drop right in with no fitting, but you never know till you try.

That’s a nice looking 586. I’d store its original trigger in its box so you can restore it to original condition if you ever want to. Trigger shoes permanently scar triggers so going that route would make it necessary to purchase another trigger before it could be restored to original.

Since trigger shoes attach to the front of the trigger, they effectively move the trigger's bearing surface forward, making the reach to it farther from the grip frame. If you have long fingers, that can be a plus; if not, it can make shooting the gun less comfortable, particularly in double-action mode.
