Taurus Vs. Smith and Wesson

When S&W can make somethin' this purdy I might buy it. I hope it shoots as nice as it looks. This will be my new carry most of the time gun if it will run well, haven't had the chance to shoot it yet, Shoo

Jellybean, could you please elaborate on your experience with the 445?

Scout, I've never had a problem with it operationaly. It shoots just fine and has never failed to shoot or extract. My problems with it are the way it feels and the poor craftmanship that went into it. I took the grips off and opened it up to work on the springs and the quality of craftmanship was awful. I also don't like the grips that are on it and can't find anyone who makes replacements. I haven't looked in awhile so there might be someone now, I'll have to take another look. There were also some sharp corners on the exterior that had to be filed down.

I have carried it off duty and have kept it by the bedside, it's not a bad gun and I wouldn't worry if I had to use it for self defense.

I think the biggest problem was the difference in quality between it and the older Taurus revolvers I have, and even the older autos for that matter. They were much better made before, but then so was S&Ws.

I own one older Taurus. It is a Model 85 and is a dang close copy of the Model 10. Tight gun that shoots just as good as a Smith & Wesson. A week or two ago I was at a out of town shop that had a few older stainless steel Taurus that like my Model 85 were very nice smooth & tight revolvers.

Working in a gun shop for the past two years I have seen and checked out the current Taurus revolvers and autos. They are all just plain junk, more so the revolvers. We had sold a number that the have come back after breaking the first time out at the range. The Judges and PT 1911's have a better track record so far. Bottom line is I wouldn't own a current made Taurus. The price is good and that is why we sell many but the quality is not worth the price. I would own a older revolver but am happy just having the one. I trusted it so much I loaned it to my Brother as a home defense gun. The older Smith's I have are just fine.

I'm a sucker for any shiny blued revolver. My local dealer had a Taurus M 94, 4" in the case.

The blueing is as nice as any other revolver I own. At $250.00 out the door I thought what the heck.

The trigger is awful. While grilling on the patio one day I had a K22 and the M94 out plinking. My wife comes out and shoots each, and while holding the Smith says " I like this one alot better".

This coming from a woman that doesn't know a 12ga. from an AR. but could tell the obvious difference in the action.

I have looked in my safe for one of these so-called Tore-ass guns. Could not find one...BUT IF I DO...I AM GOING TO SHOOT IT!!!

My two "carry pistols" are a S&W 340PD for summer or "dress up". My other pistol, and my first "bottom feeder" is a Taurus PT145. The PT145 is relatively concealable and has 10 +1 as opposed to 5 rounds in the 340. So far I have been pleased with the Taurus and have have actually had more problems with the 340 at the range--rounds walking out and striker not setting off primer.

Oh yeah, I also carry my M22/1917 when riding horses--lanyard and longer barrel.

I'm going out on a limb here... I own a Taurus PT1911 and I haven't had any issues with it. It functions well with all types of ammo and is accurate. I do own several other firearms such as Glock, Steyr and lets not forget the many Smiths that I own. I am about to join a club not far from where I live and this will probably be the gun I use.

I have a 2 year old blued Model 605 Taurus .357 2" that shoots great, feels great...So far. Not my "main squeeze" though...it's actually my main squeez's main squeeze.

That seems to be the most common experience with the PT1911. I know it is with me. No limb required.

i had a Taurus 85UL. it was a good gun, and i hated to sell it. i never planned on buying a S&W, because the prices were outrageous in my area for them, and i never see decent quality used ones. i was planning on buying an SP101, but i stumbled over a 642-1 for $350, so i snatched it up.

other than the grip, which the S&W does better, i don't care for one over the other. i don't care for S&W 1911's, though. i have one from Taurus, which is phenomenal. it's not a Wilson, but it's good.

Being a bit of a revolver guy, I never go through any of the shops I frequent without picking up any revolvers I haven't handled. The overall look and feel of Taurus revolvers has never failed to make me put it back without question. The craftsmanship is lacking IMO.

Unless I find one that I'm blown away by (no pun intended) I'll continue to be Taurus free.

I would agree with rburg. Older used S&W's I find superior to both Taurus and current production S&W's.

With current production revolvers from both Taurus and S&W, it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. Regards 18DAI.

I bought a Taurus 94 new about 10 years ago. Had the worst trigger on any firearms I've ever experienced, would misfire two out of nine shots and after a few cylinders the barrel/cylinder gap would carbon up so bad the cylinder would barely turn. Quickly I became frustrated and threw it in the back of the safe. One day I heard about the lifetime warranty and decided to send it back to Taurus.

Taurus tweaked it a little and the resulting trigger pull was much improved. For a while I kept track of how many rounds I shot through it wanting to see how it held up. I became bored though and stopped tracking after 12,000 rounds with only three misfires. This is running what ever ammo was on sale at the time I was buying.

Would I rather have a S&W than a Taurus? Of course. But that does not take away from the fact that this Taurus is filling the role I bought it for, a 22 caliber plinker and camping gun.

I have a Taurus Model 85 Ultra-Light. It's a great little gun and I've shot hundreds of rounds through it so far. 100% dependable. It's the only Taurus I've owned and, I believe, the only Taurus I've shot. I use it as a carry gun.

whats the deal with all the cracking on taurus???? I have 1 and love it, never had an fte or ftf, shoots what ever i load in it. I dont have a bad thing to say about the gun at all. It is a pt101p so needless to say it was about half the price of the beretta and just as accurate. I dont get it??

dpmac83, I think the problem is with quality control. I have several revolvers that you honestly can't tell from a S&W, others I've seen were horrible. I have two autos, a PT99 and a PT101 which I am rather fond of too, but I've known people with the PT99s that had nothing but trouble with them, although it might have been a maintainence issue.

Their quality seems to be hit or miss. I do wish I had more of them though, I'd beat the snot out them and not even give it a second thought.

Barrels falling off a whole bunch of S&W's:

NC Wants Smith & Wesson to Replace Faulty Revolvers

The point is, you can find anything you want to prove a point. ;)

If it is man made, it can and will have problems.
There have been threads of 60's and 70's vintage S&W's having problems that weren't noticed until recently because they were "NIB" and never taken out for inspection by the owner!
