Technology Detects Drivers Handling Mobile Phones

I'm driving most of the day visiting my construction projects and get a lot of calls and will usually pull off the road if I have to talk to a client or anyone for more than 30 seconds. I have the Blue tooth "hands free feature in my truck but I don't see where its one bit safer than talking into the phone but what is unsafe is when I get about 10-15 solicitor/salesman calls during the day and most are pre-recorded messages. I have to fumble with my phone and hit "block caller" and that is distracting but if I didn't block the calls I would be getting hundreds of those calls per day and not get any work done.

Aussies are deploying systems to detect drivers using mobile phones. Can't arrive in the USA soon enough for me...

I think every motor vehicle using public roads should have an operating cellphone jammer that activates when the car is moving and deliberately deactivating it should be an offense with penalty of forfeiture of the vehicle. This regulation should apply to ALL vehicles, specifically including “public safety”/emergency vehicles. No exclusions.

Yes, I realize this would be tough to enforce, AND very unpopular. ;)

This morning I went to the grocery store. Returning to my truck the car next to me was running and suddenly I heard half of a conversation turned up loud on the cars sound system. It actually startled me. I load up and get ready to back out and she decides then that it was her turn to go. Not only did she jam me up but another truck and two pedestrians. I guess we shoulda been more aware of Queen Bee.

It just goes to prove that idiots will find a way to be idiots and can do so "hands free".

I don't know the name of it but there was a system used in the gunships in Vietnam that could detect the ignition systems on truck going down the trail in Cambodia and Laos. that would be pretty easy to put in cell phones. it would shut off the phones if the engine is running

Very unpopular...that's the key. The other key is taxes.

Politicians have one aim in life - to keep getting re-elected so they can stay on the gravy train. Benefits galore, a huge salary and all they have to do is talk.

Woe is the politician whose home town football team moves to another city. Smoking kills more people than anything else, but we'll never see a ban on tobacco. Too many cellphones and manufacturers that are too large to fail. We already have bans on use in autos but the police largely ignore them.

Remember when you had a drive up phone kiosk.....with a line?

During one day how many time do you say, "Get off the dang phone and drive people." Folks just can't wait to see what is on facebook. When you are at a stop light, count the number of people driving by on the phone.

And what about passengers using the phone?

Florida just passed a "texting" law but it is so weak it is not worth diddly. People are still glued to their stupid phones!

Yes, I hate them but lets not wish for "Australian Laws"
I think of the new Aussie devices as a first step toward accomplishing the old proverb "Trust but verify".

I agree Farmer17 . There's just no way you can carry on a conversation , and concentrate on what you're talking about , and drive at the same time . Our brains aren't wired that way . I told my wife , and she's worked for AT&T 35 years , cell phones will be the down fall of civilization .

A few years ago a local radio jock came up with this plan for folks that have had to much to drink and tried to drive. It works like a breathalizer but when you blow into it, a mechanical hand would come up from under the seat and grab your scrotum and squeeze until you dropped the keys ! I think it would work the same way for using a cell phone while driving. Worth a try !

It is texting while driving that concerns me the most. A woman, distracted while driving, drifted off the road and hit my son's car in the driveway. No skid marks from braking. Probably texting.

One time I was driving, an oncoming car drifted across the double yellow line and came right at me. I turned to the left and he passed by me by inches. His hands were not on the steering wheel. His head was down. Either he was sleeping, or admiring his manhood, or texting. I'm betting texting.

I think texting while driving is more hazardous than driving while intoxicated.

I have always maintained that we have nothing to fear re. the taliban, Isis, etc, etc.

Its the American terrorists that will be the ones that cause our downfall. I won't mention names but they are the creators of the smart phone and facebook.

They have turned out youngins into morons and many adults into zombies.
