Teetotalers

Thanks to the grace of God and the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous I have been a tea totaler since August 15, 1988. Today I drink far too much diet Pepsi.

Congrats!

By the grace of God, Labor Day weekend 1983, got an anniversary coming up, if I make it, ODAAT. Primarily I drink coffee and milk.

Just curious...I've been in search of the perfect barstool for five decades. When is any of this supposed to happen?

First one I ever sat on was perfect and I was one of the lucky ones who can keep a stool warm for about 12 hours until I get my fill - not always but sometimes. I grew up with a rough crowd of hard drinkers and I was good at it. I kept that stool or one like it warm for about 30 years until age 47 and I gave booze up - not a sip since Feb 1998.

Booze caused me problems and an old timer described a problem drinker/alcoholic as being on a elevator going down - you can get off at any floor on the way down but if you stay on it you'll hit bottom.

I hate the taste of a lot of things, food and drinks both. I never understood why anyone liked beer, wine, and especially Gin and Bourbon. But I had a great time getting drunk once a year or so. I was a VERY happy drunk. But when I turned 43, I started getting flushed every time I drank more than like maybe 1 oz of any kind of booze. As time went on, it got worse, and at 63, I decided that I would get myself drunk one last time. It was a disaster. I turned lobster red, and was just too uncomfortable to have my usual giggles, etc. So that was the end of it. I don't miss it, probably because I hated the taste of it so much. But not as much as coffee, which totally revolts me, both in smell and taste. My parents drank it black, and I never understood it's appeal at all. I can literally smell a burning coffepot as soon as I get out of my car at work. I'm never wrong!

My absolute favorite thing to drink is plain old Pepsi, always was. I have one "real" one a week, and about one of the "Zero Sugar" ones a day. The Zero Sugar is a poor substitute for the real thing. As far as tea goes, just the plain old black tea, the Lipton Pure leaf Sweet is nearly perfect, and would be if it had about 20% less sugar than it does. The new lower sugar version is awful, IMHO. My "nightmare" tea is Earl Grey. It shocked me how awful it was. I thought something was wrong with it. Nope, just bad.

Pop

Some of you folks, that posted, mentioned your use of Verner’s Ginger Ale. It’s my favorite pop, and I drink it every day. Our family doctor once advised me, “If you’re going to drink pop, make it Verner’s Ginger Ale”. In that era, the Verners co. advertised that their pop i was aged in oak casks, as is whiskey.

Verners recalls fond memories of my teenage years, and cruising the streets of downtown Columbus, Ohio, with friends. The Verners Co. maintained a year-round shop, on East Broad St. a few blocks East. Of Broad and High St. An unusual Winter special was; their ginger ale served piping hot, like tea or coffee.

That folks, is my true candid tale of Verner’s Ginger Ale.

My wife is a teetotaler, I respect that. Good for you guys, I like a beer from time to time and have myself on a two beer maximum per any given day. Thats the only way I can maintain any control over it.

Thank you for telling this story. I grew up in Lake County, Ohio and enjoyed Vernors, Faygo Red Pop and Hires Root Beer. After I left home for good when I came back to visit my parents I would have a boatload of empty Vernors bottles to return for the deposit and would go back to PA or Maryland with a boatload of full Vernors bottles in the trunk of my car.

If I did that now my blood sugar would go through the roof.

Vernor's Ginger SODA

Vernor’s Ginger SODA

Mom has been calling soft drinks "pop" since before a lot of us here were born.

Edited to add;

I called mum and she said that when she was a young girl in Liverpool everyone called it ginger beer. She started calling soft drinks "pop" as that's what dad called them.
