I have an oppurtunity to purchase a model 624 in .44 Special with a 6.5" barrel. It looks to be in excellent condition. No box or paperwork, it does have the original grips. I beleive hat they were only made for a couple of years in the mid 80's. Any info on this model would be appreciated and what would be a fair purchase price for this handgun. Thanks for the help!

624

S&W HAD SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE CYLINDERS AND WERE REPLACING THEM IN A CERTAIN SER. NUMBER RANGE. THEY DID NOT MARK THE GUNS THAT THEY CHECKED BUT MARKED THE BOX WITH A RED C, BUT SINCE YOU DON'T HAVE THE BOX YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL S&W TO SEE IF YOURS IS IN THE RECALLED SER.NUMBER RANGE. THEY DON'T HAVE ANYMORE CYLINDERS SO IF IT NEEDS REPLACING THEY WON'T SEND IT BACK TO YOU IF YOU SHIP IT IN BUT WILL OFFER YOU A NEW GUN,OR AT LEAST THEY WERE DOING THAT. IT WOULD BE BETTER TO GET THE SER. NUMBER AND CHECK IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT. I HAVE A 4 INCH 624 THAT HAS BEEN CHECKED AND WAS FINE AND I HAVE BEEN SHOOTING IT FOR YEARS,GREAT GUN.

I can say that the 6.5" 624 is a sweet shooter and very accurate. They're one of those guns that just begs to go to the range for a fun afternoon. I don't know current pricing, so hopefully someone else will be along to help you with that. If the price turns out to be fair snag it, around my area you rarely see them for sale.

Smith has a recall on the cylinder on some, but not all 624s. A quick call to them with the serial number will tell you if it's one or not. The recall has been discussed a lot on this forum. I'm sure a quick thread search will provide more details if you're interested.

They are very nice revolvers in a quite useful cartridge for the handloader. IMO (for what that's worth), they are the BEST platform for the .44 Special. If in good shape and for a good price, I'd not hesitate to get another.
The serial number ranges for the recall are found in the FAQs link at the top this forum. Number 13 (page 2) gives the basics. This might help in deciding to buy before someone else does. I would still contact S&W to verify if I purchased to give piece of mind.

I've owned 3 of them and have 2 left. The 624 has a cult following and they usually get snatched up very quickly at a fairly high price. If you're thinking of buying it don't wait to long.

On the large N frame you can load them hotter then a standard .44 Spl although I don't load mine all that hot. My favorite load is 7.5 gr of Unique with a 250 gr LSWC for a velocity of about 950 fps.

You'll find it is a joy to shoot compared to the .44 Mag. If the Spl has one drawback it is ammo. Unless you reload it yourself ammo is expensive with not many choices. If you load your own, it is a very versatile cartridge.

Thanks for the info guys. He is asking $550+tax for it. I may be able to get him down a little bit. Thinking I may have to go give him a visit today....

It would be a great idea to make a visit today; I have not seen a 6.5" 624 in a long time. However, compared to a recent 4" 686 that went for $495 +tax, I think you have located a good buy.

WHY are you not posting pictures of that revolver at this very second??
For $550 it would be in my safe within an hour. I just bought 2 withing a week, both 6 1/2" one from a fellow forum member and another from a shop, both with box & paperwork, tools. One fired, one NIB and paid over $700 for each. The fired model came with an extremely nice custom made shoulder holster and had a trigger job done to it that is as fine as a bee's wing, breaks clean at 2 3/4lb.
Go back and get it, then show us.

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately, I didn't get out of work in time yesterday before the shop closed. Maybe on Monday I can get there. But, I do have a lead on another S&W stainless revolver that I'm mulling over today....a 686-3. Think I will start another thread on that one.
