Let me start by saying I'm a big advocate of holster wear on carry guns. Meaning, I hear all the time about people belly aching that their brand new carry gun is showing some holster wear. I believe that holster wear is a form of beauty and that it represents a person's devotion to carrying a firearm for the protection of his/herself and the safety of their loved ones, and it should be revered as such.

However...

I'm scared to death to tote my new 3 inch K frame model 13-3 because I fear the rust that will surely appear on it. I'm what is referred to in the cop world as a "secreator." Meaning, I tend to sweat a little more than most folks. I know, I know...TMI, right?

But seriously...I'm afraid that if I carry this little guy, he's gonna turn bright orange on me.

Anybody else like this? Or am I just a freak and should "practice what I preach" and just carry the damned thing and love whatever rust, saddlewear or other issues will surely follow.

Glockem, I carry a model 15 and a model 625 as my main carry guns. I usually wipe them down twice a week with a light coat of oil. This should prevent any rusting. I carried a nickel model 19-4 for 10 + years and never had a spot of rust on it. I would not worry about it. As long as you keep your revolver clean you will not have rust on your carry gun.

I too carry a 13-3 3inch, and like you tend to sweat a little more than others. To combat any problems, I wipe the revolver with a silicone treated cloth at the end of everyday. So far no rust.

Holster wear

I think we all would like our pistols to look new forever.... but at some point, they will show a little wear :( ..... so we just do the best we can to prevent it.
Unless you continuously draw your weapon, you should not show a lot of wear. Plus, you can always get a lined holster, if the gun is that valuable :D

I can solve your problem

Glock'em down

Just send that cute little 13-3 on over here to Arkansas and I'll try to keep it looking like its litter mate

Well I guess Im lucky I dont seem to corrode my blued gun's with sweat or fingerprints. My daily carry gun is blued and at the end of the day I remove it from its leather pocket holster and let the holster dry overnite and wipe down the gun. Once a week it gets a through cleaning and lube job. It works for me. Give it a try for a few days?

Wipe it down daily, and carry it daily. You get no use or enjoyment from it if you don't. My collection stays in the safe except the one I'm carrying, but they all get their turn at one time or another. To me, that's part of the kick of collecting and carrying. The time spent cleaning and admiring is a good time to wind down at the end of the day. Hope this helps your paranoia.

Giving you what you asked for

O.K.... you're paranoid. Carry and forget the problems!

HA! You're kidding, right? Here I was trying to think of someway to talk you out of YOURS! ;)

Mine even has the same, EXACT stocks that yours has! :D

The 3" 13-3 is too sweet a sixgun not to carry!

What I do is after cleaning, put a light coat of McGuiars car wax on the model 13.

Then every time you polish your shoes, take the shoe brush and give the 13 a couple of sweeps. Wipe it down daily and I'll wager you that you don't see a speck of rust.

I qualified in June with my 3" 13-3. 97 day, 98 night, 97 day/off duty. Sweet revolver! Enjoy yours....and carry it!! Regards 18DAI.

I'd buy it if it didn't have that PLUM barrel !!!:D

uhhhhh, I'm a cop and that's not what a "secreator" is around here. Maybe you should talk with your sex crimes detectives.

Or maybe we are talking about the same thing and thats TMI, brother.

The best thing I have used for rust protection, is Sentry Solutions Marine Tuff-Cloth. Its basically like the silicon rags on steroids, works well against salt water, so it should work well for you.

I like nickel. Something in my body oils/acids removes bluing lickety split. My blue stuff does not rust but where my hands or body come in contact, the metal looks like it came off the buffing wheel but missed the bluing tank. So what to do? Get used to it and carry.

You're absolutely right!

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've decided that, yeah...this little guy has lots of sentimental value to me, but my uncle would have told me, "son, it's just a gun. Carry it with pride."

your unlce sounds like a smart man!!!
Wish I could find a 3inch 13 to carry! Use a thin coat of Johnsons furniture wax every 3-6 months and you should be ok, oh and wipe down after each shift and carry it with pride.
God bless and stay safe!!

Well...he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, but he was just an old flatfoot who grew up in the "waste not/want not" era. He's the one who loaned my his 3 inch model 13 back in 1989 when I first donned a badge.

I had no gun other than a JP Hawes single action .22 revolver. I called up my uncle, who was a semi-retired deputy, who was still working in the jail. He loaned me his 3 inch model 13 along with an 8" leaded, leather sap and a pair of Smith & Wesson model 90 handcuffs in a Don Hume pouch.

He offered to sell me the entire rig for $200!!!

But like an idiot...I turned him down.

Anyway...as luck would have it, I was given another chance to relive my past and honor my deceased uncle Gerb when I found this little guy.

I just use a basic car wax to protect my 15 and model 10. It has worked for some time at preventing rust. I used to wipe my guns down with rig every night and that worked as well.
