THE MOST POWERFUL HAND ARM IN THE WORLD
THE FINEST TARGET REVOLVER MADE
SMITH & WESSON ACCURACY

"Magnum" a greater chamber capacity than military dimensions and power beyond the normal expectancy of the caliber.
1510 foot-seconds velocity! 800 foot-pounds muzzle energy!
More energy at 200 yards than the muzzle energy for .44 S&W Special.

"The most important handgun developed in the twentieth century." -Roy Jinks

Here is an account of the beginning. Roy Jinks presented this material at the 2009 S&WCA Annual Meeting.

S&W applied for a Trade Mark for ".357 Magnum" on January 3, 1935. It was officially registered on April 23, 1935. In the February Issue of the American Rifleman, F. C. Ness column "The Dope Bag" gives a report suggesting that the new revolver is near completion. On February 21, 1935, D. B, Wesson receives a letter from W. G. Traver asking for the retail price and the police price on the new .357 Magnum. Wesson's reply is dated February 26, 1935. "We hope very much to be able to make the announcement of the Magnum within the next three weeks." The retail price was $60.00 and the police price $48.00. The first commercial order placed was for W. G. Traver (he got number 3) on February 28, 1935. Phil Sharpe's Magnum order was dated March 19, 1935 (he got number 2). The first registered Magnum to leave the factory was registration number 1, and the recipient was J. Edgar Hoover. It shipped on April 17, 1935.

My first year gun REG 657 shipped December 24, 1935 to Potchernick's in San Antonio, Texas. It went to Texas Ranger and FBI Special Agent James C. (Doc) White.

Have been holding my breath hoping SW might release an anniversary Stainless Reg Mag with real top strap checkering, square butt grip, retro diamond Magnas and iL deleted in 3.5" , 4" and 5" lengths.
A Model 627 is a thing, but real (cut) checkering of the top strap and rib is not likely to happen due to cost.

Richard I have similiar gun REG#36 with 8-3/4" barrel ,but funny enough my letter from Roy Jinks say it was sighted for 6 o'clock hold with 38 Specials! So obviously the fellow was a Bulls Eye Shooter. I wish S&W still made revolvers like these, very few Regs made it to Canada!
Cheers Dale Z

I’d be thrilled just to have it in the blued finish and lock deleted, available in those barrel lengths. I’d be all in on a new 5 inch.

Most of us (myself included) believed the lock would never be eliminated from any exposed hammer Smith revolver and were proved wrong. So here’s hoping for more!

Short and Sweet.
Younger eyes and steady hands, back in the early '80s,
lobbing bullets out to 135yds, near the Ridge Route in Calif,
along with the long barreled K22M.
The 357 is still in use with Hogue Monos.
Pic with a Mexican birth year silver dollar.
Sorting out brass yesterday, found lotsa Nickel 357 cases,
from the Police ranges, Sunrise and then Markham.

The absolutely magnificent RMs so beautifully presented here are a joy to behold. Makes me proud to own a few examples of more humble descendant pieces. Thanks guys for being great stewards of such wonderfully preserved historical pieces.

Two good Roy Jinks articles on the .357 Magnum.
"The Revolver that Changed the Direction of Handgunning" was published in the Winter 1989 S&WCA Journal.
"Registered .357 Magnums" was published in the Summer 2010 S&WCA Journal.
S&WCA members can download both at the S&WCA website.
The rest of you should consider joining.

"You can make remarks about the ancestry of my dog. Have your doubts about the gas mileage toted up by my family sedan. Spread the story, if you wish, that my backyard barbecues could best be digested by a brood of Arkansas razorbacks. But if you cast aspersions on my .357 Magnum sixgun, get somebody to hold your coat. We'll continue the discussion in the alley."

It's honestly insane that a traditionally styled 627 and a stainless Highway Patrolman (628) have never been made.
