The 3914

Nope.

Standard DA/SA with a decocking lever/safety.

It's a blue 3913 in a nutshell.

The DAO counterpart is the 3954 in blue, 3953 in SS.

Some 3914's are DAO, specifically in the Law Enforcement community.

Not exactly....the 3913 and 3914 are standard DA/SA with a safety-decocker lever.

The corresponding DAO gun is the 3953 or 3954.

So if you want the 3914 platform in a DAO version, what you want is a 3954 (blue) or 3953 (stainless).

All are great guns.

I have no idea why its just not called a 3954, but applying logic to the NYPD is a fruitless endeavor.

I guess I stand corrected. I have never seen a DAO 3914. Maybe a special run for NYPD??

That is not a 3954 frame or slide, which is typically about 3/8" longer than a standard 3914. So what you have truly is a DAO 3914.

Very nice

Could it have been converted by S&W? I know they do it because they quoted me about $125 to do my 3913, which I have not done yet.

From what I understand its made to NYPD specs, but you don't necessarily have to be a NYC cop to buy one. When I bought mine I had to wait about a month for it because S&W was waiting to get enough orders to build a run of them. I bought mine from a local gun store, in fact the NYPD Equipment Section doesn't even sell off duty guns anymore. So if you really wanted a 3914DAO contact a NYC area gun store, they probably have them in stock. That link to Standard Law would be your best bet, they are a pretty big Smith & Wesson distributor.

If anyone is interested in product or feature codes I can dig up the gun box and post the info.

The 3914 DAO is a different weapon than the 3954 or 3953. The action is different its not the standard Smith DAO as found on the 3954 & 3953 or 5946. The slide does not have to move back to recock the action. You have second strike capability.
The weapon is marked on the frame 3914DAO.
I love mine feals just like a revolver.

Here is my 3914DAO. Like njdet354 said, the action is just like a revolver with the same trigger pull each time. My 3914DAO has the older markings which I prefer over the lasered stuff.

Is there such a thing as a 3914 with the angular frame like the Ladysmith or 3913 NLS? If you had a 3913 NLS you could have it converted to DAO?

Rick Devoid at Tarnhelm Supply, www.tarnhelm.com, can convert any conventional DA/SA auto to DAO. As noted by others in this thread, it will have second strike capability but will also have a longer, heavier pull than S&W's own, purpose-built DAO design.

I would be interested in handling his conversion.

I handled a 3954 DAO one day and the straight backstrap and short, weird IMHO, pull just did not feel right for me. I like the gun otherwise.

I also dislike the tap-rack-bang requirement when the gun does not fire. I would prefer the revolver type DAO in which you just pull the trigger again, but that is the downside of a semi.
