Oh what the heck, heres mine..
P1010004w.jpg

it's one of the little "lost ones" in the safe,I probally should either take it out & shoot it or send it off to a new home

Say when. I'll take it off your hands (if I don't get another first).

The -0 has hammer mounted firing pin and forged (I think) parts.
The -1 has frame mounted firing pin and MIM parts.
that said, my -1 runs just fine and has a very tight "precise" feel. Very well fitted and so smooth that no smoothing was necessary.

There's also the dash-3 variant the has all of the modifications of the dash-1 in addition it also has the internal (Hillary Hole) lock.
My 696 is a no dash, sorry I don't post pictures yet. but will get started soon. All I can say about the 696 is WoW!! Shame S&W discontinued the model! That goes for the 19/66 too! Good guns that cannot be found now for less than an arm and a leg anymore. Now were seeing the same price increases in good third Gen autos too. Too bad all the manufactures just want to make Tupperware guns anymore. Nothing wrong with the Tupperware, I have many myself, but they just don't compare to good old fashion metal firearms.

I was surprized by how much the 696 weighs.
I don't think it's much less than the 3" 624 if any at all.

My 696 weighs 35.8 oz. and my 3" 624 weighs 38 oz's. It wasn't as much difference as I thought.

The obligatory pic: :)

I'm a later-comer to the 696 club, but once I got my admission ticket I set up camp for an extended stay.

This one literally appeared out of nowhere at my small-town LGS over a year ago. It came in used with no box or paperwork, and a friend purchased it an hour before I arrived. We traded even up for a NIB USFA Rodeo in .357, and both went away happy.

The moral of the story ... whatever rarity or high demand model you are looking for, be persistent, and have faith. You really never know when a beauty will fall into your possession.

To the origional poster, by now you probably have figured out that the 44 special is indeed special. And dare I say has indeed a cult following. I own 3 and just might look for another. Enjoy yours. Frank

Did I make a mistake? I traded my like new .357 Mtn Gun, no Box or papers for a 696-0 with box and papers etc. straight across. The .357 Mtn gun is a rarity also. I miss it but I wanted the 696. I have not seen another .357 Mtn gun other than mine. I have never seen a 696 in my area either.

Tom

Mine is the less desirable 696-2.

My wife purchased it new for my Birthday years ago for less than $400, when a local dealer was trying to get rid of it, shortly after manufacture was discontinued by S&W.

Mine has the sissy hole too. It is the slickest action of all my smifs. Feels like the action is on ball bearings. Sounds like a metallic symphony cycling through the action. Less desirable?
