The Ammo with the best stopping power may not be the best for home defense.

I'm new here and don't want to make too many waves but don't people secure their windows and doors before retiring? My first line of home defense are well locked doors and windows. I don't have to even consider shooting an intruder if he can't get in. In my part of NJ the only bad guys getting shot are getting shot by other bad guys in the street. Home invader shootings are almost unheard of.

Question. Are you legally responsible for slugs downrange in a self defense situation, or is the home invader, committing a felony, given the responsibility for any death?

I may be completely off base (it has happened), but it is my understanding that people committing felonies should get the blame. If you are attacked, you have the right to defend yourself in a reasonable manner. If the only reasonable defense is gunfire, the attacker, being the cause of your action, should be responsible for any death. This would result in a murder charge for the attacker if there is any collateral damage.
This is a nice logical argument, but what is the law?

As I am not a lawyer, I can not advise. I can however tell you that if two men are robbing a store, one is shot and the other escapes/survives/surrenders the living one is guilty of felony murder in many states. It is necessary to put down a deadly threat for the sake of one's own life as well as bystander's. I suggest we try to hit our targets and deal with the legal ramifications in court where they belong.

Lot to be said about the Judge with # 4 shot. I live in a mobile home park. Might not kill a bad guy but he won't be shaving for a while.
