The Car/Truck Gun

Every gun I own could be a truck gun! My truck will carry any one of em, so size really doesnt matter. Seriously, I guess I shouldnt joke about it.
First you have to know exactly what you want a gun for. A rancher neighbor of mine carrys a version of a AR-15 to open up on coyotes when he see,s one. I rode one day with him and we seen a yote running at about 600 yards off. I was entertained as he kicked up the dust around him. The next guy might be a hunter or a varmint shooter. The next guy wants protection. Me, I simply hate snakes. So I would think overall it would go like this, at least for me.
1. Know the perceived likely use. This is the first and most important thing to consider. One gun wont do it all!
2. I would want a fairly cheap version of it to rattle around in the truck.
3. Due to most states laws, I would like a box magazine if it were a rifle so I could get it in action quickly.
When I travel I am most apt to carry just a S&W model 40 in my pocket. My biggest activity is exploreing the boonies with our quad. Since I own many handguns it seems I usualy pack a different one every time I go, so I am not much help here! I like to keep trying one I have neglected from the back of my safe. If I were to recomend one, I like in the following order, .44 special, .45 colt and then .357. While I have a few, I am not so much of a auto guy as revolver. For quad purpose,s in the boonies, I dont feel a bit hampered by single actions either.
For my truck were I really to leave guns in it, (and I DONT!), it would be either my remington pump 760 with box magazine in 30-06, OR my .357 Puma 92 lever action. I own far better and more exspensive guns, but these will do the job and wont cost a fortune to replace, except the remington was dads, and I wouldnt want to lose it. So maybe I would leave the .357 puma, or my browning 92 in .44 mag in the truck. Decisions, decisions!
For a handgun, probley my .44 special S&W converted from a heavy duty, as it is somewhat beat up and not worth near as much as my good stuff and will do the job.

Boy I tell you, most of you guys makes me feel safe when you are ready for a war on home grounds. When I carry a 357 with 6 rounds I feel good myself :D .

I don't have a car/truck gun, however I do have a barn gun. It's an old Iver Johnson 16ga Champion single shot shotgun. The wrist was cracked when I bought it so I glued and wired the stock. The barrel was cut to 20", a new front sight installed and the whole thing Parkerized in one of my experiments.

For the last 30 years it has been stored loaded with buckshot and a piece of electrical tape covering the muzzle. It has accounted for several groundhogs, a couple crows, a few rats and one deer. The shotgun has traveled by tractor, quad and truck, so maybe it counts as a truck gun after all.

For a handgun I think the same as your most often carried primary.
That way extra mags and ammo is the same. It can be a more basic, ie less expensive version.

If you are going to have something different a Glock is hard to beat.

For rifles, a lever action is not a bad choice as it is more "socially acceptable" than an "EBR" [Evil Black Rifle], but a basic AR 15 16" Carbine is not a bad choice, as that is what most Police carry, so if they drive up while you are "using yours" you are not automatically seen as a "Bad Guy".

I carry my 229 in .357 sig with 2 spare mags in a small nylon bag. My wife calls it my Man Purse. Keeps my wallet, keys, all those items I need no matter which vehicle I'm in. Works pretty well.

Do admit that I also carry an AK-74 in my Tahoe in a small case that fits easily and unobtrusively behind the frt seat.

Yugo SKS and a well-worn M&P .38 Spl. in a bug-out bag. Plus whatever I happen to have on my belt or in my pocket at the time. Not fancy but reliable; also expendable in the event.

Other combinations possible depending on circumstances.

Whatever I have on my body, plus a Kel-Tec P3AT in a pickup hidey-hole. I wish vehicles had a decent place to holster a sidearm and to stash a long gun...something built into the furniture without it showing. Back when, Dad kept a M1903 Colt strapped to the steering column and it got him out of trouble at least twice when the West was still somewhat wild. Now everywhere is "wild" and I've no place to hide a gun except on me.

...to stash a long gun...

After I had a rifle stolen from a window gun rack (I know, I know, I was young and stupid back then) I attached a gun rack to the metal spars on the back of the seat of my '83 Ford F150. I carried a Remington 1100 12 gauge in an unzipped gun case there, safely out of sight but readily at hand, for several years with no issues. Still wish I had that rifle though.:(

Lately I'm rockin the G19 with TLR-1 in the holster under my steering wheel and my SP101 in a pocket or on my lap depending. 19 comes in at night or when my vehicle is not in sight.

J-frame in the console or on my belt in a crossdraw rig. 12 ga coach gun or Mosin M38 scout carbine behind the seat, depending whether I'm headed into the city or out to the farm.

Granted I do have a gun in my car and another in my truck. Yet they are both the same gun. When I get out of either vehicle, the gun goes with me. Sometimes I place it on my right side, sometimes it is in a shoulder holster.

The only way someone can take it is to take it from me, not from my vehicle. I do not find it to be a problem remembering to remove it from the vehicle. I just step out of the car and it is right with me.

This gun is a S&W 1911 with a five inch barrel, stainless and more accurate than I am.

I carry a Beretta 92 (M9) in the console between the seats and a Kel Tec Sub 2000 with 30 round magazine in the trunk. Both guns use the same magazines.

My suburban is a rolling triage vehicle-got guns, flashlights, tools-canned goods(sardines & knipper snacks), waders, decoys, shell bag-Louisiana Criminal Code on the dash board next to three boxes of Hornady .457 cal ball for my Old Army. Three or four neck ties and an emergency blue blazer in the back seat. about 3-4 legal pads & a pot full of pens. 5 gallon bucket in the back-ice down beer or use as an impromptu head. One fortress 4# anchor with 6 feet of chain and 150' of rode-four 15' 3/8" dock lines and 2 25' spring lines. I'm pretty much ready for anything :D

For a while in the early 1980's my truck gun was a Remington Rolling Block in 50 Carbine. Then a friend traded me out of it for something, it's still hanging on his wall.
