This was Lola. A text book definition of "faithful companion".

Sadly she just took her last car ride. Cancer had rapidly overtaken her.

At the animal hospital the staff took Lola into a separate room and ushered Sarah, Ray, Ian and Anna into a beautifully decorated facsimile of a living room with two large sofas and two easy chairs. Lola was brought in on a large, comfy dog bed. She had her IV port installed and pain meds were administered. The vet said they could say goodbye for as long as they liked as there was no time limit at all. He then handed them a doorbell. He said that whenever they were ready to just push the doorbell.

After about 30 minutes of petting and crying they let Anna ring the doorbell. The vet came in and administered the drugs and Lola, after less than a minute, closed her eyes and passed. They took Lola out and then returned with copies of Lola's paw and nose prints for the family. Ian and Anna were each presented with this touching and highly acclaimed children's book. Even if you have no pets I strongly suggest you read it.

Sarah said it was the most dignified, heartfelt and peaceful transition she has ever witnessed and hopes she can leave that way.

Meet Bear. A 12 week old, 35 pound Cane Corso.

The circle continues.

Lola, RIP and may you find sunshine and slow rabbits on your journey.
Bear, you have big paws to fill. Don't worry, you'll grow into them.

John 15:13 starts, "Greater love hath no man than this..." Notice they didn't mention dogs. Because it's no contest, dogs win hands down. That may be why their lives are so short. They love 100% 24/7. Whatever "it" is, they use it up loving us. Any wonder I like dogs more than people?

For all the love and companionship they give us we owe them a peaceful ending. It surely sucks that pets don't live longer than we do. Been almost a year since we had to make the trip with 2 of out old dogs. Plus, the only one left is getting pretty gray, but she id enjoying being the only dog.

So sorry for your loss. I hate these threads because I never know what to say. I just hope you know you will see Lola again and she will be happy and healthy once again.

Rusty, I'm still not over Muley Gill's loss of his Dixie Bell. Now I see that you have lost your Lola. i'm hurting for you and your family but I must say how impressed I am by the kindness and thoughtfulness shown by the vet's office. That was a fine send off and thinking back on some of my experiences that weren't so good I am sure that it's made, and will continue to make the grieving process go a lot smoother. What a comfort that must have been.

I think one of the things that hurts me the most is that our friends can't talk to us or understand our words. This is a time when there are words that need to be said. I know that even though we can't talk to each other we are still, at some level, able to communicate. I'm sure she could feel your love and that she, at some level, appreciated the love and kindness from you and your family. My prayers are up for your comfort and acceptance.

Bear looks like a sweet heart. Gotta love that face. God blwss.
