This was Lola. A text book definition of "faithful companion".
Sadly she just took her last car ride. Cancer had rapidly overtaken her.
At the animal hospital the staff took Lola into a separate room and ushered Sarah, Ray, Ian and Anna into a beautifully decorated facsimile of a living room with two large sofas and two easy chairs. Lola was brought in on a large, comfy dog bed. She had her IV port installed and pain meds were administered. The vet said they could say goodbye for as long as they liked as there was no time limit at all. He then handed them a doorbell. He said that whenever they were ready to just push the doorbell.
After about 30 minutes of petting and crying they let Anna ring the doorbell. The vet came in and administered the drugs and Lola, after less than a minute, closed her eyes and passed. They took Lola out and then returned with copies of Lola's paw and nose prints for the family. Ian and Anna were each presented with this touching and highly acclaimed children's book. Even if you have no pets I strongly suggest you read it.
Sarah said it was the most dignified, heartfelt and peaceful transition she has ever witnessed and hopes she can leave that way.
Meet Bear. A 12 week old, 35 pound Cane Corso.
The circle continues.
