The Everything Gun

I think I would go with my 2.5'' bbl. M66-1 just because my 29 has a 8 3/8'' bbl and it would be kinda hard to carry.

Even though this is a S&W forum my choice would be the "R" gun;

Ruger New Model Blackhawk Convertibile, 4 3/4" barrel, blue finish is ok with the grip frame slightly roundbutted for concealibilty, in 45 Colt and 45 ACP cylinders.

Hey, the OP said one gun nothing about having more than one caliber.

627 Pro. I like that caliber for all the reasons we've been reading and I love that 8 round cylinder. It ain't too big to carry if you have a good holster and a better belt.

For a long time it was a Remington turnbolt .22RF with 4X scope.

For a 15 year period only hunting gun I had was an O/U with 16 gauge and 7X57R rifle barrel. Deadly on grouse, turkeys, deer, rabbits, squirrels. It is still my favorate gun.

For maybe 20 years my trail (not hunting) gun was a Ruger Vaquero in 44-40. Then it was a Swedish Nagant in 7,5 Nagant for some years.

Today my "all-purpose", only-gun-I-owned would be a S&W M60 with 5" barrel, for everything but bird hunting. This gun was purchased for such that purpose. Everything from concealed carry to deer. It is also my current trail gun.

For me it would be a tossup between:
1. Colt Trooper .357 4"-my favorite revolver
2. S&W M-28 6"-defines "heavy duty" IMHO.
3. Dan Wesson M-15 Pistol Pac-4 guns in one.

Best All-around Gun an AR-7

No question - an AR-7 in .22 LR. Very light weight, so easy to pack and carry, short for storage, floats, very accurate and reliable (Yeah, I know not everyone shares this opinion, but I have two of them and both of mine actually are), mild report, and lethal (while I haven't done it, my daddy killed quite a few deer with a .22 LR using head shots). Plus you can tote a lot more .22 LR rounds than anything bigger, and .22 LR ammo is much more likely to be available anywhere on the planet than any other caliber. If only there was an AR-7 in .22 Magnum, I'd probably go with it. If I could have ONLY one gun in an EOTWAWKI situation, it would have to be an AR-7. Second choice would be almost any 12 gauge shotgun. I wouldn't worry much about concealability. If I could have a handgun in addition, it would be a Ruger .22 automatic, for commonality of ammunition and reliability.

Glock 17.

Whoops, wrong forum! ;)

Actually, I'd probably pick a K or L frame in .357. Either my 620 or 66. Both have 4" barrels. As stated previously - the .38/.357 is very versatile, and both are pretty concealable.

Instead of the J frame, I'll go for S&W's 3 1/2" M27-8 this time. Reliable, accurate, flexible power, comforting to have. The 627 Pro is a very close second.
