Since I saw the threads on other older movies, thought I'd mention these.....

I've not seen Casablanca but I've watched my share of other older movies. For the longest time people advised me to watch the godfather and scarface.

I was told that I had not watched a good movie till I watched those two.

Honest opinion.......

THEY SUCKED!!!

Way better older movie options in my opinion!

It's a mad mad mad mad world comes to mind, if you want to watch a good old movie.

I don't know. Classic movie advice from one who has never seen Casablanca?

Well... m'kay I guess...

I agree. Scarface and the first Godfather movie?

Who's advising the OP? Neither of those even qualify as "Old Movies" in my world.

Classic old movies actually depict the director's and actor's interpretation of the story while leaving something for the imagination of the audience.

I haven't seen The Godfather but I have seen Casablanca. I've read the book The Godfather though as well asThe Last Don and The Scilian and I'm working on Omerta.

Good books and I'm sure better than the movie

Scarface
Are youse guys talking about the remake or the original?

Try watching Little Caesar and Public Enemy. And the original (1932) Scarface.

"Not Old Movies"
Well, The Godfather came out in the '70s, IIRC. Don't look now, but that was about 40 years ago! :D

The Al Pacino Scarface is terrible. It did not age well and Al makes the worst Cuban ever. It's nearly impossible for me to sit through it.

Scarface gained notoriety when it was released in the 80s over glorifying the drug trade and the use of violence and language. Once notorious, it gained a cult following amongst wannabe tough guys and gangstas, giving it even more credibility. It was quotable, simple and very violent. Just what the masses wanted. Watch into today and it's just laughably bad, like so many other 80s movies.

Whoever is feeding you this trash as great movies needs to stop.

ETA: Al Pacino is one of the most overrated actors out there. His acting in Heat nearly ruins that movie as well.

Being a big movie buff, I find some movies are relevant based on how old you are. I have a ton of movies I enjoyed when I was younger, but find no interest in them today. Movies I didn't like when I was younger, I now like or find relevant.

Sometimes it's an age or maturity thing with certain movies.

Or sometimes it's even a season of your life you're in where you might like a movie now you didn't like before.

Have to agree with that. Sweet Liberty, for example. I thought that was great, first time I saw it, 20 or so years back. So I recently got a copy of it. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Hollywood's Golden Era doesn't stretch into the 1970's.

My idea of an "old movie" is similar to most everything else in America. A classic oldie was made prior to the "free for all" 1960's.

i thought "red dawn" was a great movie when i was 15-16 . i watched it again recently...
jeremiah johnson however, just as good today as the first time i saw it at 6-7 yrs old. i think it was the first "grownup" movie i had ever watched on tv. still one of my alltime favourites.
made in 1972 i guess it doesnt qualify as old, but it sure is a classic to me.

scarface was cool when i was a teen, but it wasnt that good.
i agree that the godfather was as boring as anything ive seen, but you really should watch casablanca ,you wont regret it.

I thought "The Godfather" was the most boring movie I've ever slept through. I went to see it in the theater when had just been released. I was expecting something great from all the reviews and hype. I fell asleep long before halfway. I've never bothered to try to watch it again. Probably never will.

I've never even bothered to try to watch "Scarface."

"Where can I find Bear, Beaver.................& other Critters"

Sorry, I couldn't resist.:D

There are some modern movies that I enjoy. I liked Jeremiah Johnson.

One of my favorite quotes is from Jeremiah when he asks another character "Where you headed?" The answer, "Same as you are Jeremiah, hell in the end."

I'm watching Tombstone now. I am kinda partial to Dana Delany.
