The Gunfather: Restorations

Like I said in my original post, this is a polarizing and controversial subject. Y’all definitely proved that! Can everyone at least agree that the shop is nice, and located in a beautiful part of the country?

Yes. The shop, the town, and the surrounding areas are nice but I wouldn't trust them with my firearm. I've watched probably all of the episodes and have wondered: do the people who submit requests for their firearm to be chosen for "restoration" work have to pay for the work done or is it free? To me, the show is comparable to "American Pickers", entertaining, but like most TV shows, scripted and planned out. As a previous poster noted, I cringe when I see some of the polishing and sanding on the firearms. If you look on their website, the prices for new firearms are not cheap and I bet their work isn't either!! With hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in their business, I can see why their prices for work and firearms could be excessive.

“Restore” and “ Refinish” are Very Different. Have several family firearms , many already given to our son and a few in a safe. None were abused by grandparents or my Dad, cleaned and oiled after use even 100 years ago. Sure one can do whatever they want with their property but many ruin the value in the market but in their minds they have “ saved” a family firearm.
Don’t have cable so do not watch any of these shows, all seem to be just more bollywood garbage made for tv.

Remember the Gun father episode where Louie had to go fly fishing to sell a potential customer an expensive rifle?????? Reality tv at its finest. One of about 4 episodes I’ve seen.

If you do a search on Louie you will not find anything related to gunsmith training other than he says he learned all that he knows from Pops. You never see him doing any gunsmithing on the show, just looking over parts and talking about what the other guys are doing. I think most understand that this is just a scripted reality type show for entertainment purposes. Send a gun to Louie for a restoration and all Louie does is take your money. Unknown guys in the back of the shop do all the work.

I was with a buddy in Cabelas last week. I bought a Henry AR-7 off the discount rack, and he (flush with yearly bonus cash) bought a Winchester SxS and a .303 Jungle Carbine.

He texted me and a another buddy asking where he could get it reblued and find a replacement stock. I asked why, and he said he wanted to make make it original. FWIW, it had the original finish and stock.

Some people just want their guns to look new. It matters not a whit to me.
