As a Navy vet myself I always check out people wearing Navy ballcaps with their ship names and I like to say hello. I was in a grocery store last week and saw a old gent wearing a USS Shadwell (LSD) hat. I was wearing my USS Independence jacket so I introduced myself. I still can't get over this. He was on that ship during WWII in the Pacific. The Shadwell was torpedo'd in the Phillipines in late 44 and tore a 60' deep hole in its hull and it was assumed she would sink. Destroyers were sent to get the crew but somehow the crew sealed off that section and kept it from going down. Also the torpedo plane that dropped the torpedo was shot down. I was very honored to meet him and told him. Of course he just laughed at that but his wife was tearing up. I hope I see him again.
