Just wondering if anyone has seen this movie? It is from a true story, it did NOT however take place in Pa. it took place in Ohio. I read the true story about it several years ago in Readers Digest. The movie has been embellished/Hollywoodized a great deal but they really did a good job about keeping it factual. Pretty decent movie compared to some of the other trash coming out of Hollywood these days and attempting to pass for art/entertainment.

Good movie, especially for railroad buffs. Probably full of inaccuracies, but I was impressed.

Somehow I didn't think ARs were going to slow the thing down much.

I believe the use of firearms was intended to hit a fuel cut off switch - but even a solid hit is not long enough to properly operate the cutoff.

I thought is was a pretty good movie - not sure if I knew before reading this post that it was based on a real incident. While I am sure they made some parts more dramatic than they truly were - the one part that stood out for me as a come on now, that just could not happen, was when they hit the turn so fast that all the wheels on one side came off the track but it didn't fill over. I am not saying that I don't think it possible that you could have the wheels on one side come up off the track at all - and I am not sure exactly how high the center of gravity is on a locomotive - but as depicted in the movie it appeared to me that they were way beyond the point at which there was any possibility that the train would NOT have left the tracks entirely around the bend.

I saw a documentary on this incident - San Bernardino train disaster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - which worked backwards starting with the explosion and fire and revealing the chain of events that led to that catastrophe. A perfect example of how a series of events and decisions based on misinformation can converge to result in disaster.

Parts of it were filmed near me in central PA, along Rt 120. Not being Hollywood (thank the heavens) it is neat to ride by a bridge or a section of road you see in a movie.

Using Google Earth or your map program, look east of Emporium, PA and see how close the RR runs along Rt 120 in places, into Renovo.

Parts were also filmed between Olean NY and Emporium.

I have to ask...Isn't a gandydancer a railroad term for a track crew...I remember my father talking about the gandydancers on the Erie RR in the 50's I think...Not sure...he was talking about the road track maintenance but it seems he was....Just curious

According to library books I read when I was in school the answer is yes. I wanted Gandydancer as a screen name when I first got on line but someone else already had it so AOL in their infinite wisdom suggested other variations of it and so I settled for Ogandydancer which is just simply adding the first letter of my first name to it.

I really liked the movie and I've never seen it. The reason I like it is that the production outfit paid me $150.00 to use the parking space in front of my house for their food trailer. I live a few houses up from the railroad tracks and they were filming here for a day. I saw Mr. Washington out front and didn't even recognize him, thought his fancy dressed driver was him, as you can tell I'm not a modern movie guy. My wife bought the movie when it came out and I never have bothered to watch it.
