The "New" Normal?

Yeah they have kegs of RE10 that nobody seems to want. Makes my heart skip every time I see the logo.

RE10? As in Reloder 10x in 5 lb kegs? And nobody is buying? That seems really odd since it is a powder for rounds like .223 / 5.56
Maybe they are asking a ridiculously high price?

I haven't checked. Everyone around here wants Varget. But see this is a huge store and maybe three people on the staff actually reload. There is no powder on the sales floor, just a three ring binder showing what's in stock. So I don't think any of the sales people are actually knowledgeable enough to inform people about alternative powders.

If I didn't have so much CFE223 I might try the RE10 but what I really want is RE17 and 19. I haven't seen those since before covid.

Most every gun show in this area we have a fellow sells Alliant Powders. Ain't cheap but he's got most of it. I refuse to pay his prices.

I live in a reloading supplies desert. Only option is online ordering and getting hosed with the dadgum hazmat shipping fee for primers or whatever-is-available powders.
One of the reasons that even retired, I still work p/t.

One of the curses of getting older is 'remembering how it was'. It seems to hit me pretty hard as I have worked at LGS/Reloading Supply businesses in the past and so well remember what sane prices were at the time.

Have no real strong need for anything right now except for Large Pistol Magnum primers - even with the imports coming in now, those are absent in about everyone's inventory it seems. I have a strong suspicion that these foreign companies don't even produce Magnum primers. IDK....

I have purchased Federal and CCI Large Pistol Primers from the local Bass Pro Shop in the past year. If you have one near you they will have every size primer in stock. I have what is likely a lifetime supply so you can buy some now.

I used to burn quite a lot of Reloder50 before the Madness. I have seen
people hoping to find it. I have found a few interesting powders due to
the shortages. Autocomp, Longshot, and CFEBLK for example. I bought a
few Federal last week because they were available and a slight dip, SPP
w/ shipping and hazmat @ 10c ea. I am filling in with offbrand as they become available sub 7c w/ tax.

Edited to add: The 625 needs Federals.

DID finally find some CCI LP Mag. primers at a site I used to use for shotshell loading components - 'Target Sports USA'.

Still irks me to pay almost 100 bucks for a 1k box, but suppose that IS the 'new normal'. And yes, the good ol' Hazmat Fee was right there waiting on me.
I only use the Magnum primers in a few different hunting loads in .41 and .44 Mag., so I should be set well into my dotage.

Federal small pistol primers on Canadian websites are $61.57 per 1000. Large ones are $66.70.

That is probably where prices should be here as well. Of course, demand plays a greater role here.

I was intrigued by the title of this thread, "The New Normal".

Paul in Nevada observed:

"My fear is that the manufacturers have written off the handloading market and are happy to see us relegated to a tiny niche market of precision shooters and collectors of obsolete firearms. In other words, people who will buy at essentially any price."

I, too, am concerned about this.
Once upon a time, every shooter I knew reloaded. It was part of the sport. For some of us, it was the most enjoyable part.
But today I think it is even worse than this.
The vast majority of folks I see at ranges today simply come out with their plastic 9mms and AR or AK rifles, indiscrimately hose some close range targets, then pack up and leave their mess behind. They seem perfectly happy with bulk pack mediocre quality factory ammo, much of it from backwards third world countries. Handloading, being both time and thought consuming, isn't a real good fit when the objective is instant gratification of base instincts.
Factor in the poor shooting and safety etiquette that seems to be part of this "new normal" and it appears that our "sport", if you can even call it that, seems to have changed.

But concerning the prices of components, it doesn't make sense that quality domestic made primers should be priced close to that of match grade 22 LR ammo.
